아침저녁으로 선선한 바람이 불고 들녘의 벼가 황금빛으로 익어가면서 본격적인 추수철이 다가오고 있다.

농업인들에게는 1년 동안 흘린 땀과 정성을 수확하는 가장 바쁜 시기다. 그러나 농기계 사용이 집중되면서 각종 안전사고 위험도 함께 높아지는 만큼 어느 때보다 세심한 주의가 필요하다.

특히 농기계 사고는 한순간의 부주의가 중상이나 사망으로 이어질 가능성이 높다는 점에서 각별한 경각심이 요구된다.

2024년 농기계 교통사고는 277건이 발생해 33명이 숨지고 301명이 다쳤다. 치사율은 11.9%로 전체 교통사고 치사율 1.3%보다 약 9배 높은 수준이다.

대표적인 농기계 사고 유형으로는 끼임과 전복·전도, 교통사고 등이 꼽힌다.

농기계에 볏짚이나 풀 등 이물질이 걸렸을 때 시동을 끄지 않은 상태에서 이를 제거하려다 신체 일부가 기계에 끼이는 사고가 발생할 수 있다. 경사진 농로나 논밭에서 농기계를 운행하다 중심을 잃고 전복되는 사고도 각별히 주의해야 한다.

수확철에는 작업량이 많아 밤늦게까지 농사일을 하는 경우도 많다. 어두운 도로에서 경운기나 트랙터 등 농기계를 운행하다 뒤따라오거나 마주 오는 자동차와 충돌하면 대형 인명사고로 이어질 위험이 크다.
농기계 사고를 예방하기 위해서는 무엇보다 작업 전 점검을 생활화해야 한다.

브레이크와 타이어, 조향장치, 전조등·후미등 등 등화장치가 제대로 작동하는지 확인하고 이상이 발견되면 운행 전에 반드시 정비해야 한다.
특히 농기계를 정비하거나 기계에 걸린 이물질을 제거할 때는 반드시 엔진을 정지하고 시동을 끈 뒤 기계가 완전히 멈춘 것을 확인하고 작업해야 한다.

야간 농기계 운행도 가급적 자제해야 한다. 부득이하게 도로를 운행해야 한다면 전조등과 후미등, 방향지시등, 반사판 등 안전장치가 정상적으로 작동하는지 반드시 확인해야 한다.

자동차 운전자 역시 농촌지역 도로를 운행할 때는 농기계가 언제든 나타날 수 있다는 점을 염두에 두고 충분한 안전거리를 확보하고 감속 운전해야 한다.

무엇보다 술을 마신 뒤 농기계를 조작하거나 도로를 운행하는 행위는 절대 해서는 안 된다.

추수철의 순간적인 방심은 1년 농사를 힘겹게 만드는 데 그치지 않고 소중한 생명까지 앗아갈 수 있다.

황금빛 들녘에서 시작한 수확의 기쁨이 사고의 아픔으로 바뀌지 않도록 농기계를 조작하는 농업인과 농촌도로를 이용하는 운전자 모두가 안전을 한 번 더 살펴야 한다.

안전을 최우선으로 생각하는 작은 습관이 가족의 행복과 농촌의 안전을 지키는 가장 확실한 방법이다.

As cool breezes begin to blow in the mornings and evenings and rice fields turn golden, the full-scale harvest season is approaching.
For farmers, this is the busiest time of the year, when they finally reap the rewards of a year’s hard work and dedication. However, it is also a period when the intensive use of agricultural machinery increases the risk of serious accidents, requiring greater caution and attention than ever.
Farm machinery accidents are particularly dangerous because even a brief moment of carelessness can result in serious injury or death.
In 2024, a total of 277 traffic accidents involving agricultural machinery were reported, resulting in 33 deaths and 301 injuries. The fatality rate was 11.9%, approximately nine times higher than the 1.3% fatality rate for overall traffic accidents.
Common types of farm machinery accidents include entanglement, overturning, rollovers and traffic collisions.
Entanglement accidents can occur when farmers attempt to remove rice straw, grass or other debris caught in machinery without first shutting off the engine. There is also a significant risk of machinery overturning when tractors or other agricultural vehicles are operated on sloped farm roads or uneven fields.
During the harvest season, farmers often work late into the night because of heavy workloads. Operating tractors, cultivators or other farm machinery on dark roads can be particularly dangerous, as collisions with approaching or following vehicles can lead to serious or fatal accidents.
To prevent farm machinery accidents, thorough safety inspections before operation should become routine.
Brakes, tires, steering systems, headlights, taillights and other lighting equipment should be carefully checked. Any defects should be repaired before the machinery is operated.
Most importantly, when conducting maintenance or removing debris caught in agricultural machinery, the engine must be shut off and the operator must make sure that all moving parts have come to a complete stop before beginning work.
Nighttime operation of agricultural machinery should also be avoided whenever possible. If driving on public roads at night is unavoidable, operators should make sure that headlights, taillights, turn signals, reflectors and other safety devices are functioning properly.
Motorists traveling on rural roads must also remain alert to the possibility of encountering slow-moving agricultural machinery. Drivers should reduce their speed and maintain a safe following distance.
Above all, agricultural machinery must never be operated or driven after consuming alcohol.
A single moment of carelessness during the harvest season can do more than jeopardize the results of a year’s hard work—it can also cost a precious life.
The joy of harvesting golden fields should never turn into the sorrow of an accident. Farmers operating agricultural machinery and motorists traveling on rural roads alike must take one more moment to check for safety.
