“To my second-semester self: Even when things get difficult, you can do it.”
Students in Haenam have written special letters praising themselves for making it through the first semester and offering encouragement to the person they hope to become in the new semester.
Rather than being delivered immediately, the letters traveled through the summer vacation and returned to the students after the second semester began. The initiative, called the “Slow Mailbox,” allows students to receive words of encouragement written by their past selves just as they embark on a new semester.
The Wee Center of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City Haenam Office of Education, headed by Superintendent Cho Yeon-ju, announced on September 8 that it operated the “Slow Mailbox” program throughout July as part of its student emotional well-being initiative.
A total of 122 students from 17 elementary, middle, and high schools in Haenam participated in the program.
The “Slow Mailbox” was designed to help students reflect on their school life and personal growth as they completed the first semester, while supporting emotional stability and positive self-awareness as they prepared for a fresh start.
Rather than simply writing a letter to their future selves, the program encouraged students to recognize their own efforts, achievements, and personal development.
Students first wrote down “Three Things I Want to Praise Myself for After Completing the First Semester.”
They reflected on the things they had worked hard to accomplish, new challenges they had taken on, and difficult moments they had overcome, giving them an opportunity to recognize personal growth they might otherwise have overlooked.
They then wrote about the goals they hoped to achieve during the second semester and included words of encouragement and support for their future selves.
The letters were written using a QR-code-based system. After summer vacation, the heartfelt letters, along with small gifts, were delivered to the students through their respective schools following the start of the second semester.
Receiving letters written by their first-semester selves gave students a unique and meaningful way to begin the new semester.
One participating student said, “Looking back on the first semester, I realized that I had accomplished more than I thought, and I wanted to praise myself for that. If things become difficult during the second semester, I want to remember the letter I wrote to myself and find the strength to keep going.”
The Haenam Office of Education expects the program to help students move beyond focusing solely on grades or outcomes and instead recognize the value of their own efforts, changes, and personal growth.
The office also believes that giving students an opportunity to reflect on their feelings and set new goals during the transition between semesters can help them adjust to school life and strengthen their emotional well-being.
Superintendent Cho Yeon-ju said, “We created this program to give students an opportunity to pause amid their busy school lives, reflect on themselves, and experience the value of self-encouragement.”
“We will continue to provide a variety of programs that support students’ emotional well-being and healthy development,” she added.
Meanwhile, the Haenam Office of Education Wee Center continues to operate counseling, preventive education, and various student mental and emotional well-being programs aimed at helping students adjust to school life and maintain emotional stability.
