해남의 어린이들이 학교와 어린이집을 벗어나 미술관에서 그림을 감상하고 직접 그리고 만들며 자신의 생각과 감정을 표현하는 정기 미술교육 프로그램이 운영된다.
특히 특수교육 대상 학생들에게는 미술을 통한 정서적 치유와 자기표현의 기회를 제공하고, 유아들에게는 미술관을 일상적으로 찾으며 창의성과 감각을 키울 수 있도록 프로그램이 구성돼 눈길을 끈다.
행촌문화재단(이사장 김동국) 행촌미술관은 해남동초등학교 특수반 학생들과 아트빌어린이집 6세 어린이들을 대상으로 오는 12월까지 미술관 연계 정기 교육프로그램을 운영한다고 밝혔다.
교육은 해남읍 해남로 45 해남종합병원 내 신축 행촌미술관에서 진행된다.
행촌미술관은 지난 5월 신축 이전하면서 미술관 1층에 별도의 교육공간을 마련하고 병원에 입원한 어린이와 지역 어린이들을 위한 상시 미술교육을 운영해 왔다.
이번 프로그램은 여기에서 한발 더 나아가 지역 초등학교와 어린이집이 정기적으로 미술관을 찾는 학교·지역 문화시설 연계형 교육으로 확대했다는 데 의미가 있다.
■ 특수반 어린이들에게 미술관은 ‘치유와 표현의 공간’
해남동초등학교 특수반 학생들을 대상으로 하는 프로그램은 전남문화재단 지역특성화교육 지원사업을 통해 운영된다.
행촌미술관은 병원 안에 위치한 미술관이라는 공간적 특성을 살려 프로그램의 주요 방향을 ‘치유’에 맞췄다.
어린이들이 친구들과 정기적으로 미술관을 방문하면서 미술관을 어렵거나 낯선 장소가 아닌 편안하고 친근한 공간으로 받아들이도록 하는 것이 첫 번째 목표다.
전시된 그림을 함께 감상하고 예술가와 직접 작업하면서 자신의 감정과 생각을 자연스럽게 표현할 수 있도록 교육과정도 구성했다.
단순히 그림을 잘 그리는 방법을 가르치는 방식에서 벗어나 그림 감상과 그리기, 물감 활동, 만들기 등 다양한 미술 활동을 통해 어린이들이 심리적인 부담 없이 작품을 만들어 갈 수 있도록 했다.
이 과정에서 자신의 생각과 감정을 표현하는 능력을 키우고 친구들의 작품과 이야기를 접하면서 타인을 이해하고 공감하는 경험도 넓힐 수 있도록 한다.
미술관은 이 같은 창작활동이 어린이들의 자기표현을 돕는 것은 물론 개개인이 가지고 있는 예술적 가능성을 발견하는 계기가 될 것으로 기대하고 있다.
해남동초 프로그램은 총 10회 과정으로 구성돼 두 반이 격주로 참여한다.
■ 금요일은 어린이들의 ‘미술관 가는 날’
아트빌어린이집과 함께하는 프로그램은 더욱 일상적인 미술관 경험에 초점을 맞췄다.
행촌미술관과 아트빌어린이집은 6세 어린이들의 창의적인 표현 능력을 키우기 위해 매주 금요일을 ‘미술관 가는 날’로 정해 정기적인 미술교육을 진행한다.
대상은 아트빌어린이집 6세반 어린이 약 30명이다.
한꺼번에 많은 어린이가 참여하기보다는 약 15명씩 오전과 오후 두 그룹으로 나눠 교육의 집중도를 높인다.
프로그램은 9월 4일부터 12월 말까지 총 14회 진행될 예정이다.
행촌미술관은 특히 6세 전후가 창의성과 감각, 언어, 사회성, 자기표현 능력이 빠르게 발달하는 시기라는 점에 주목하고 있다.
이 시기 어린이들이 다양한 예술작품을 보고 자신의 방식으로 다시 표현하는 경험은 창의적 사고의 기초를 형성하는 데 도움을 줄 수 있다는 설명이다.
또 작품을 세밀하게 관찰하면서 시각과 감각을 발달시키고 자신이 생각한 것을 그림이나 조형물 등으로 완성하는 과정에서 자신감과 성취감도 경험할 수 있다.
무엇보다 미술관에서 예술가들의 작품뿐 아니라 함께 참여한 친구들의 작품을 접하면서 ‘나와 다른 표현’이 틀린 것이 아니라 또 하나의 생각이라는 점을 자연스럽게 배우도록 하는 데 교육적 의미를 두고 있다.
친구의 작품을 보고 이야기를 듣는 과정 역시 다른 사람의 생각을 경청하고 존중하는 사회성을 기르는 교육으로 연결한다는 것이다.

■ 전남문화재단 지원…참가비 무료
이번 교육프로그램은 전남문화재단의 강사비와 재료비 지원을 받아 참가비 없이 운영된다.
지역 어린이들이 경제적 부담 없이 전문적인 문화예술교육을 경험할 수 있다는 점도 특징이다.
행촌미술관은 미술관의 기능이 작품을 수집하고 전시하는 데 그치는 것이 아니라 지역 주민, 특히 성장기 어린이들에게 예술을 경험하게 하는 교육공간으로까지 확대돼야 한다는 방향을 세우고 있다.
이에 따라 이번 학교·어린이집 연계 프로그램을 계기로 지역 어린이들이 미술관을 특별한 날에 한 번 방문하는 장소가 아니라 자연스럽게 드나들 수 있는 일상의 문화공간으로 인식하도록 한다는 계획이다.
행촌미술관 관계자는 “미술관의 중요한 역할 가운데 하나가 교육”이라며 “이번 프로그램을 통해 어린이들이 미술관을 친숙하게 느끼고 예술을 통해 자신의 생각과 감정을 자유롭게 표현하는 경험을 쌓기를 기대한다”고 밝혔다.
한편 행촌미술관은 어린이를 위한 상시 교육공간과 단체 교육프로그램도 운영하고 있다.

Children in Haenam are taking part in regular art education programs that bring them out of their classrooms and daycare center and into the museum, where they can view artworks, draw, paint, create and express their own thoughts and emotions.
The programs are particularly designed to provide special education students with opportunities for emotional healing and self-expression through art, while helping younger children develop creativity and sensory awareness by making museum visits a regular part of their lives.
The Haengchon Museum of Art, operated by the Haengchon Cultural Foundation chaired by Kim Dong-guk, said it is running regular museum-based educational programs through December for students in special education classes at Haenam Dong Elementary School and six-year-old children from Artville Daycare Center.
The programs are being held at the newly relocated Haengchon Museum of Art, located within Haenam General Hospital at 45 Haenam-ro, Haenam-eup, Haenam.
Following its relocation to the new building in May, the museum opened a dedicated educational space on the first floor and has been providing ongoing art education programs for hospitalized children as well as children from the local community.
The latest initiative expands those efforts by establishing regular partnerships with a local elementary school and daycare center, allowing children to visit the museum on a continuing basis and experience art as part of their education.
Museum Becomes a Space for “Healing and Expression” for Special Education Students
The program for students in special education classes at Haenam Dong Elementary School is being conducted as part of a regional specialized education support project funded by the Jeonnam Foundation for Arts and Culture.
Taking advantage of the museum’s distinctive location within a hospital, Haengchon Museum of Art has placed “healing” at the center of the program.
One of its primary goals is to help children become comfortable with museums by regularly visiting the museum with their classmates, allowing them to experience it not as a difficult or unfamiliar institution but as a welcoming and accessible place.
The curriculum also encourages children to view artworks together and work directly with artists, providing opportunities to express their emotions and thoughts naturally through artistic activities.
Rather than focusing simply on teaching children how to draw well, the program incorporates a wide range of activities, including viewing exhibitions, drawing, painting and craft-making, so that participants can create without feeling psychological pressure.
Through these experiences, children are encouraged to develop their ability to express their thoughts and emotions while also learning to understand and empathize with others by engaging with their classmates’ artwork and stories.
The museum hopes that these creative activities will not only strengthen the children’s self-expression but also help uncover and nurture their individual artistic potential.
The Haenam Dong Elementary School program consists of 10 sessions, with two classes participating on alternating weeks.
Friday Is “A Day at the Museum”
The program organized in partnership with Artville Daycare Center focuses on making museum visits a regular part of children’s everyday experiences.
Haengchon Museum of Art and Artville Daycare Center have designated every Friday as “A Day at the Museum,” offering regular art education designed to foster creative expression among six-year-old children.
Approximately 30 six-year-olds from Artville Daycare Center are participating.
To provide a more focused learning environment, the children are divided into two groups of about 15, with one group participating in the morning and the other in the afternoon.
The program runs for a total of 14 sessions from September 4 through the end of December.
Haengchon Museum of Art noted that around the age of six, children experience rapid development in creativity, sensory awareness, language, social skills and self-expression.
Art education during this developmental stage can help establish the foundations of creative thinking while providing children with diverse ways to communicate their emotions and ideas.
By closely observing artworks, children can also develop their visual awareness and sensory abilities. The experience of turning their own ideas into drawings or three-dimensional creations can further strengthen their confidence and sense of achievement.
Another important educational aspect is helping children understand that a friend’s different way of expressing an idea is not “wrong,” but simply another perspective.
By viewing artworks created by professional artists as well as those made by their friends, children learn to listen to and respect the thoughts and perspectives of others.

The educational programs are offered free of charge, with instructor fees and art material expenses supported by the Jeonnam Foundation for Arts and Culture.
This allows local children to experience professional arts and cultural education without financial burden.
Haengchon Museum of Art considers education to be one of the essential functions of a museum, extending beyond the traditional roles of collecting, preserving and exhibiting artworks.
The museum aims to serve as an educational and cultural space where local residents—particularly children during their formative years—can experience and engage with art.
Through its partnerships with the elementary school and daycare center, the museum hopes children will come to see the museum not as a place they visit only on special occasions, but as an accessible cultural space that is naturally woven into their everyday lives.
“Education is one of the most important roles of a museum,” a Haengchon Museum of Art official said. “Through these programs, we hope children will become familiar and comfortable with the museum and gain meaningful experiences expressing their thoughts and emotions freely through art.”
Meanwhile, Haengchon Museum of Art also operates a permanent educational space for children and offers educational programs for groups.
