“해남 아이들이 해냈다”…1년 배운 AI로 국제대회 은상·동상 쾌거

전남 해남의 아이들이 약 1년 동안 지역아동센터에서 배운 인공지능(AI) 기술을 바탕으로 국제대회에 출전해 은상과 동상을 차지했다.

대도시의 전문학원이나 특수교육기관이 아닌 농어촌 지역아동센터를 중심으로 시작한 AI 교육이 국제대회 수상으로 이어졌다는 점에서 해남지역 교육계의 주목을 받고 있다.

해남지역 아동들은 지난 7월 30일부터 8월 2일까지 서울 코엑스에서 열린 제3회 인공지능(AI)국제융합로봇대회(AIIRC)​에 참가해 AI 레이싱 부문에서 은상과 동상을 수상했다.

이번 대회에는 늘푸른지역아동센터 2개 팀 5명과 예닮지역아동센터 2개 팀 6명 등 모두 4개 팀, 11명의 해남지역 아동들이 참가했다.
아이들은 국제대회라는 낯선 무대에서도 그동안 갈고닦은 AI 기술과 팀워크를 발휘하며 의미 있는 성적을 거뒀다.

돌봄공간에서 시작한 AI 교육, 국제대회까지 갔다
이번 수상이 더욱 의미 있는 것은 아이들의 교육이 일회성 체험행사에서 시작된 것이 아니라는 점이다.
해남군은 지역아동센터 아동들이 지역이나 가정환경에 따라 디지털 교육에서 소외되지 않도록 AI 전문교육을 지원해 왔다.
지역아동센터와 전문 교육기관이 협력하고 전문강사를 투입해 아이들이 인공지능의 기본 원리부터 로봇을 활용한 실습까지 단계적으로 배울 수 있도록 했다.

특히 교육은 단순히 로봇을 움직이거나 기기를 조작하는 수준에서 벗어나 AI가 데이터를 인식하고 학습한 뒤 스스로 판단하는 원리를 이해하도록 하는 실습 중심 방식으로 진행됐다.

아이들은 실제 대회를 준비하면서 반복적인 주행훈련과 문제 해결 과정을 거쳤고, 팀원들과 역할을 나눠 경기를 준비하면서 협업능력과 실전 대응능력도 키웠다.
수차례 모의경기를 통해 실패 원인을 찾아 프로그램을 수정하고 다시 도전하는 과정을 반복한 것으로 알려졌다.
결국 약 1년 동안 이어진 교육과 훈련이 국제대회 은상과 동상이라는 결과로 나타난 것이다.

늘푸른·예닮지역아동센터가 만든 ‘작지만 큰 변화’
이번 성과에서는 늘푸른지역아동센터와 예닮지역아동센터의 역할도 주목된다.
지역아동센터는 그동안 방과 후 돌봄과 급식, 기초학습 지원 등이 주요 기능으로 인식돼 왔다.
그러나 해남에서는 지역아동센터가 AI와 디지털교육을 접할 수 있는 새로운 교육공간으로 영역을 넓히고 있다.

전문적인 사교육을 받기 쉽지 않은 농어촌 아이들이 자신이 생활하는 지역아동센터에서 AI를 배우고, 그 결과 국제대회까지 출전했다는 점은 지역아동센터의 새로운 가능성을 보여준다.
특히 센터 관계자들은 아이들이 중간에 교육을 포기하지 않고 꾸준히 참여할 수 있도록 학습을 관리하고, 대회 준비와 팀 활동을 지원하는 역할을 맡았다.
AI 교육은 장비와 강사만 제공한다고 성과가 만들어지는 것이 아니다.
아이들이 흥미를 잃지 않고 지속해서 참여하도록 곁에서 관리하고 격려하는 생활교육이 함께 이뤄져야 한다는 점에서 지역아동센터의 역할이 컸다고 볼 수 있다.

해남군 교육발전특구, ‘수상 실적’보다 중요한 것은 교육기회
해남군은 교육발전특구 사업과 연계해 지역의 교육여건을 개선하고 AI·디지털 분야 교육을 확대하고 있다.
농어촌 지역은 대도시에 비해 코딩학원이나 로봇교육기관, AI 전문강사 등을 접할 기회가 상대적으로 부족하다.
때문에 이번 사례는 “해남에서도 교육기회만 제대로 제공하면 아이들이 충분히 경쟁력을 보여줄 수 있다”​는 사실을 확인했다는 점에서 의미가 있다.

특히 교육발전특구가 단순히 시설을 짓거나 행사를 개최하는 사업이 아니라 실제 아이들에게 어떤 교육기회를 제공하고 어떤 변화가 나타났는지를 보여주는 사례라는 점도 눈여겨볼 필요가 있다.
해남군이 행·재정적 기반을 마련하고, 전문교육기관이 AI 교육을 담당하며, 지역아동센터가 아이들의 지속적인 학습과 생활지도를 맡는 협력구조가 만들어졌기 때문이다.

지역 교육정책에서 중요한 것은 ‘어디에서 태어났느냐’가 아이들의 교육 수준을 결정하지 않도록 하는 것이다.
해남읍이나 면 지역에 산다는 이유로 AI와 첨단기술 교육에서 뒤처져서는 안 된다.
이번 국제대회 수상은 바로 그 가능성을 보여준 첫 성과로 평가할 수 있다.

“상을 몇 개 받았나.”보다 앞으로 몇 명에게 기회를 줄 것인가
그러나 이번 성과를 단순한 ‘수상 홍보’로 끝내서는 안 된다.
현재 일부 지역아동센터에서 진행되고 있는 AI 교육을 해남지역 전체 아동들에게 얼마나 안정적으로 확대할 수 있을지가 더 중요하다.
해남에는 여러 지역아동센터가 운영되고 있는 만큼 앞으로는 센터별 교육기회 차이를 줄이고, AI 기초교육에서 자율주행·로봇·코딩 등 심화과정으로 이어지는 단계별 교육체계를 마련할 필요가 있다.
또 초등·중등 단계에서 시작된 AI 교육이 고등학교와 대학, 진로·직업교육으로 이어질 수 있도록 해남교육지원청과 지역 학교, 해남군, 교육 관련 기관 간 연계도 강화해야 한다.
국제대회 한 번의 수상이 곧바로 ‘AI 인재 육성 성공’을 의미하는 것은 아니다.
이번 대회에 참가하지 못한 아이들에게도 같은 기회를 제공하고, 몇 년 동안 지속적으로 성장할 수 있도록 교육체계를 만드는 것이 진짜 성과다.
특히 해남군이 교육발전특구와 솔라시도 AI·에너지 산업을 미래 성장동력으로 내세우고 있는 만큼, 지역 아이들을 위한 AI 교육 역시 단기간의 체험사업이 아니라 장기적인 인재육성 정책으로 추진할 필요가 있다.
해남의 아이들이 국제무대에서 보여준 것은 단순한 은상과 동상 두 개의 메달이 아니다.
농어촌에서도 아이들에게 제대로 된 교육기회와 장비, 전문강사, 꾸준한 지원을 제공하면 충분히 새로운 분야에 도전할 수 있다는 가능성을 보여줬다.

이제 행정과 교육기관이 답해야 할 차례다.
“몇 명이 상을 받았느냐”를 홍보하는 데 그치지 않고, 해남의 더 많은 아이들이 같은 기회를 받을 수 있도록 지속 가능한 AI 교육환경을 만들어 가는 것, 그것이 이번 국제대회 수상이 해남에 남겨야 할 진짜 성과다.

Children from Haenam, South Jeolla Province, have won silver and bronze medals at an international competition after applying the artificial intelligence skills they learned over the past year at local community child centers.
The achievement is drawing attention in Haenam’s education community because the children’s AI education began not at specialized academies or elite training institutes in large cities, but at community child centers in a rural area.
The Haenam students participated in the 3rd Artificial Intelligence International Convergence Robot Competition (AIIRC), held at COEX in Seoul from July 30 to August 2, where they won silver and bronze medals in the AI Racing category.
A total of 11 children from Haenam competed in four teams: two teams consisting of five children from Neulpureun Community Child Center and two teams consisting of six children from Yedam Community Child Center.
Despite competing on an unfamiliar international stage, the children demonstrated the AI skills and teamwork they had developed through months of training and achieved meaningful results.
AI Education That Began in a Care Center Reached the International Stage
What makes the achievement especially significant is that the children’s education was not a one-off experience or short-term event.
Haenam County has supported specialized AI education so that children attending community child centers are not excluded from digital learning opportunities because of where they live or their family circumstances.
Community child centers worked with professional education organizations and instructors to provide step-by-step training, ranging from the basic principles of artificial intelligence to hands-on robot-based learning.
The program went beyond simply moving robots or operating devices.
Children were taught through practical exercises how AI recognizes and learns from data and how it can make decisions autonomously.
In preparing for the competition, the students repeatedly practiced driving, worked through technical problems and divided responsibilities among team members, strengthening both collaboration and real-time problem-solving skills.
They reportedly held repeated mock competitions, identified the causes of failures, modified their programs and tried again.
After nearly a year of training and practice, those efforts ultimately resulted in silver and bronze medals at an international competition.
Neulpureun and Yedam Community Child Centers Create a “Small but Significant Change”
The role of Neulpureun Community Child Center and Yedam Community Child Center also deserves attention.
Community child centers have traditionally been regarded mainly as places providing after-school care, meals and basic academic support.
In Haenam, however, they are expanding into new educational spaces where children can gain access to AI and digital learning.
For children in rural areas, where access to specialized private education is often limited, the opportunity to learn AI at their local community child centers and eventually compete in an international event demonstrates a new potential role for these facilities.
Center staff also played an important part by helping the children continue their studies without giving up, managing their learning progress and supporting team activities and competition preparation.
AI education cannot produce meaningful results simply by providing equipment and instructors.
Children need continuous encouragement and guidance so they remain interested and engaged. In that respect, the day-to-day educational support provided by the community child centers played a significant role.
Haenam’s Education Development Special Zone: Opportunity Matters More Than Medals
Haenam County is expanding AI and digital education as part of efforts to improve local educational conditions through its Education Development Special Zone initiative.
Rural communities generally have fewer opportunities than large cities to access coding academies, robotics institutions and specialized AI instructors.
For that reason, this case is significant because it demonstrates that children in Haenam can also show strong competitiveness when they are given proper educational opportunities.
It also shows that an Education Development Special Zone should not be judged simply by how many facilities are built or how many events are held, but by what learning opportunities are actually provided to children and what changes those opportunities produce.
A cooperative structure has been created in which Haenam County provides administrative and financial support, professional education organizations deliver AI instruction, and community child centers provide continuous learning support and daily guidance.
One of the most important goals of local education policy should be to ensure that where a child is born or lives does not determine the quality of education that child can receive.
Children should not fall behind in AI and advanced technology education simply because they live in Haenam-eup or one of the county’s rural townships.
The international competition results can be seen as an early indication of what becomes possible when those barriers are reduced.
The Bigger Question Is Not “How Many Medals?” but “How Many Children Will Get the Same Opportunity?”
The achievement, however, should not end as a publicity story about winning awards.
What matters more is whether the AI education currently being offered at selected community child centers can be expanded steadily and sustainably to children across Haenam.
With multiple community child centers operating throughout the county, future policy should reduce differences in educational opportunities between centers and establish a step-by-step curriculum that progresses from basic AI education to advanced fields such as autonomous driving, robotics and coding.
Greater cooperation is also needed among the Haenam Office of Education, local schools, Haenam County and other education-related organizations so that AI learning begun in elementary and middle school can continue into high school, university, career education and vocational pathways.
A single international competition result does not, by itself, mean that Haenam has successfully built an AI talent-development system.
The real measure of success will be whether children who did not participate in this competition can receive the same opportunities and whether they can continue developing their skills over several years.
Haenam County has identified the Education Development Special Zone and the AI and energy industries connected with Solaseado as key drivers of future growth.
For that reason, AI education for local children should also be developed as a long-term talent-development policy rather than a short-term experiential program.
What Haenam’s children demonstrated on the international stage was about more than two medals.
They showed that children in rural communities can take on new technological challenges when they are provided with proper educational opportunities, equipment, professional instructors and sustained support.
Now it is the turn of local government and education authorities to respond.
Rather than simply promoting “how many children won medals,” the next task is to create a sustainable AI education environment that gives many more children across Haenam the same opportunity.
That will be the true legacy of Haenam children’s achievement at this international competition.
