해남경찰서가 현산면 마을이장 33명 전원을 ‘교통안전반장’으로 위촉하고 고령자 교통사고 예방을 위한 마을 단위 안전망 구축에 나섰다.

해남경찰서(서장 박미영)는 지난 12일 현산면사무소에서 현산면 이장단을 대상으로 치안설명회를 열고 마을이장 33명에게 교통안전반장 위촉장을 전달했다고 밝혔다.

이번 위촉은 초고령지역의 특성상 고령자 교통사고 예방의 중요성이 커짐에 따라 마을 사정을 가장 잘 아는 이장들을 중심으로 경찰과 주민 간 교통안전 소통체계를 구축하기 위해 마련됐다.

경찰은 마을이장들의 현장 경험과 주민 접근성을 활용해 지역 곳곳에 남아 있는 교통안전 사각지대를 더욱 촘촘하게 살피고, 위험요인을 신속하게 발굴·개선한다는 방침이다.
박미영 해남경찰서장은 치안설명회에서 최근 지역 내 112신고와 교통사고 발생 현황을 설명했다.

이어 범죄예방 환경개선과 실종자 조기 발견을 위한 민·관 협력체계 구축, 교통안전시설 개선 등 경찰서의 주요 추진사항을 소개하고 주민 안전을 위한 지역사회의 적극적인 협조를 당부했다.

이번에 위촉된 교통안전반장들은 경찰이 제공하는 교통안전 정보를 마을방송과 단체메신저 등을 통해 주민들에게 전달하게 된다.

또한 마을 안에서 사고 위험이 큰 도로와 교통안전시설을 보완해야 하는 장소를 발굴해 경찰에 알리고, 주민들의 교통 관련 불편사항과 건의사항을 전달하는 현장 소통창구 역할도 맡는다.

해남경찰서는 교통안전반장들이 위험요인을 손쉽게 제보할 수 있도록 담당 경찰관의 연락처를 안내했다.

교통안전반장이 위험한 장소의 사진과 정확한 위치를 경찰에 전달하면 담당 경찰관이 현장을 확인하고, 개선이 필요하다고 판단될 경우 도로관리청 등 관계기관과 협력해 조치할 예정이다.

이를 통해 경찰 중심의 일방적인 교통안전 활동을 넘어 주민들이 위험요인을 직접 찾아내고 개선 과정에 참여하는 생활밀착형 교통안전 체계가 구축될 것으로 기대된다.

박미영 해남경찰서장은 “교통사고를 예방하기 위해서는 경찰의 노력뿐만 아니라 마을 사정을 누구보다 잘 아는 이장님들의 관심과 협조가 무엇보다 중요하다”며 “교통안전반장들과 지속적으로 소통하면서 주민들이 체감할 수 있는 안전한 교통문화를 만들어 나가겠다.”고 말했다.

The Haenam Police Station has appointed all 33 village heads in Hyeonsan-myeon as “Traffic Safety Leaders,” launching a village-level safety network aimed at preventing traffic accidents involving older residents.
The Haenam Police Station, headed by Chief Park Mi-young, held a public safety briefing for the Hyeonsan-myeon village heads at the Hyeonsan-myeon Administrative Welfare Center on Aug. 12 and presented appointments to all 33 participants.
The initiative was organized in response to the growing need to prevent traffic accidents involving older people in the region’s rapidly aging communities.
By working with village heads who understand local conditions better than anyone else, police aim to establish a direct communication network with residents and more closely monitor areas that may otherwise remain outside existing traffic safety measures.
Police plan to use the village heads’ local knowledge and close contact with residents to identify and address traffic hazards throughout the area quickly.
During the briefing, Chief Park explained recent trends in 112 emergency calls and traffic accidents across the district.
She also introduced the police station’s major initiatives, including crime prevention through environmental improvements, public-private cooperation to locate missing persons quickly and upgrades to traffic safety facilities. She asked the local community to actively cooperate in efforts to protect residents.
The newly appointed Traffic Safety Leaders will share traffic safety information provided by police through village broadcasts and group messaging apps.
They will also identify dangerous roads and locations where traffic safety facilities need to be installed or improved and report them to police.
In addition, the leaders will serve as community-based communication channels by relaying residents’ traffic-related complaints, concerns and suggestions to the police.
The Haenam Police Station provided the leaders with the contact details of designated officers so that traffic hazards can be reported easily.
When a Traffic Safety Leader submits photographs and the exact location of a hazardous site, an officer will inspect the area. If improvements are deemed necessary, police will work with road management authorities and other relevant agencies to take appropriate action.
The initiative is expected to establish a community-oriented traffic safety system in which residents participate directly in identifying and addressing risks, moving beyond a safety program led solely by the police.
“Preventing traffic accidents requires not only the efforts of the police but also the interest and cooperation of village heads, who know their communities better than anyone,” Chief Park said.
“We will maintain close communication with the Traffic Safety Leaders and work together to create a safer traffic culture that residents can genuinely experience in their daily lives.”
