전남광주 진도군 신비의 바닷길 인근 해변에서 어린 자녀를 구하려던 40대 어머니와 아들이 숨지는 안타까운 사고가 발생했다.

12일 오후 1시 50분께 진도군 의신면 신비의 바닷길·소삼도 인근 해변에서 물놀이하던 가족이 물살에 휩쓸렸다.

당시 자녀들이 물에서 위험에 처하자 어머니가 구조하기 위해 바다로 들어간 것으로 알려졌다. 일부 자녀는 스스로 빠져나오거나 주변 구조를 받아 목숨을 건졌지만, 어머니와 어린 아들은 심정지 상태로 구조돼 병원으로 옮겨졌으나 끝내 숨졌다.

사고 당시에는 만조를 지나 바닷물이 빠지는 시간대였던 것으로 알려졌다. 해경은 가족들이 빠져나가는 물살에 휩쓸렸을 가능성을 포함해 정확한 사고 경위를 조사하고 있다.

이번 사고는 관광객들이 많이 찾는 신비의 바닷길 주변에서 발생했다는 점에서 현장의 안전관리 실태도 확인할 필요가 있다.

특히 사고 지점의 수심과 조류, 위험 안내판과 구명장비 설치 여부, 안전요원 배치 여부, 구명조끼 착용 여부, 신고부터 구조까지 걸린 시간 등에 대한 정확한 조사가 요구된다.

바다는 얕아 보여도 물때가 바뀌면 순식간에 위험해질 수 있다. 특히 어린이를 동반한 물놀이에서는 구명조끼 착용과 조석시간 확인이 생명과 직결된다.
해경은 목격자와 생존자 등을 상대로 정확한 사고 경위를 조사하고 있다.
두 생명을 앗아간 이번 참변이 단순한 물놀이 사고였는지, 위험한 바다를 충분히 알리고 대비했는지까지 철저한 확인이 필요하다.

A tragic accident near Jindo’s famous Mysterious Sea Road has claimed the lives of a mother in her 40s and her young son after she reportedly entered the sea in an attempt to save her children.
At approximately 1:50 p.m. on September 12, a family playing in the water near the Mysterious Sea Road and Sosamdo area in Uisin-myeon, Jindo County, was caught in strong currents.
According to initial reports, the mother entered the water after her children found themselves in danger. Some of the children managed to escape the water on their own or were rescued with assistance from people nearby.
However, the mother and her young son were recovered in cardiac arrest and transported to a hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.
The accident reportedly occurred after high tide, when the tide was receding. The Korea Coast Guard is investigating the exact circumstances of the accident, including the possibility that the family was swept away by strong outgoing currents.
Because the accident occurred near the Mysterious Sea Road, a popular tourist destination, questions are also being raised about safety management in and around the area.
Authorities need to establish the water depth and strength of the currents at the accident site, whether adequate warning signs and lifesaving equipment were in place, whether safety personnel were deployed, whether life jackets were worn, and how long it took rescuers to reach the victims after the emergency was reported.

Two lives have been lost. A thorough investigation is now needed to determine whether this was simply a tragic water accident—or whether the dangers of the sea were adequately communicated and sufficient safety measures were in place to prevent such a tragedy.
