On October 9, 2026, a news report alleged that an operator involved in an illegal seaweed farming case in Wando approached a fishing village cooperative by citing political connections. The operator reportedly promised to secure a new aquaculture license and eventually hand the farm over to residents, but the promised license was never issued.
Mokpo MBC reported on October 9 that a broker identified by the surname Lee established seaweed farms in the waters around Sinji, Wando, while other operators ran them. A fishing village cooperative leader said the operators had proposed developing and using the farms before transferring them to local residents.
According to the report, an operator from outside the area emphasized his ties to National Assembly member Park Jie-won and invited the lawmaker to a gathering of fishing village cooperative representatives. The operator acknowledged to MBC that he had used the lawmaker’s name to advance his activities. The broadcaster reported that the operators and broker earned more than KRW 1.5 billion in one year from operating the illegal farms.
In a telephone conversation with a fisherman from Modo, Wando, dated August 9, 2023, and released by the broadcaster, the operator said he worked for Park. In another conversation, he referred to the lawmaker’s aide while discussing the possibility of obtaining an aquaculture license.
Park and his aide acknowledged knowing the operator but denied any involvement in the illegal farming operations. Park said he had severed ties after learning of the illegal aquaculture activities.
According to Mokpo MBC, the Coast Guard is investigating the operator on suspicion of fraud and operating illegal aquaculture farms, while also examining possible links to the lawmaker and his aide. Whether any political figures were involved remains a matter for investigators to establish and cannot be determined from the October 9 report alone.
