“Game Items Are Virtual, but Fraud Losses Are Real”: Haenam Police Urge Caution in Teen Online Trading
Police outline scams involving sellers who disappear after payment or lure buyers with unusually low prices
Check seller history, retain chats and payment records, and seek help from a guardian or police if scammed

Haenam Police Station has urged teenagers to be cautious about online fraud when buying or selling game items and accounts. Because the identity of the other party can be difficult to verify, police advise checking a seller’s transaction history and reputation before making a purchase and keeping chat logs and payment records.
In a press release distributed on October 7, police outlined common scams and prevention measures, noting that the widespread use of smartphones and online games has led many teenagers to trade game items and accounts through secondhand marketplaces and gaming communities.
Common scams include sellers promising to send an item immediately after payment, then taking the money and cutting off contact. Others attract buyers with prices far below market value before requesting payment.
Police explained that teenagers eager to obtain an item should avoid rushing into a transaction without checking the details. Offers that appear exceptionally attractive warrant another look at both the price and the seller’s information.
Before trading, buyers should review the seller’s transaction history and reputation and carefully assess items offered at unusually low prices. Caution is also needed when a seller insists on payment by bank transfer or asks to move the transaction to another messaging service. Users should avoid casually clicking links or opening files sent during a transaction.
Keeping transaction records is also essential. The other party’s account information, sales listing, chat history, transaction amount and payment records can help establish what happened if fraud occurs.
Teenagers who fall victim to a scam should seek help from a parent, guardian or police rather than trying to resolve the situation alone.
Police emphasized that games have become an important part of teenagers’ social interaction and leisure, and that transactions within games should be taken seriously. Deceiving someone to obtain their money may constitute fraud even when the transaction involves a virtual game item.
Parents were also encouraged to discuss safe trading practices and how to respond to scams with their children, rather than simply prohibiting the trading of game items or accounts.
“Game items may be virtual, but the money used in transactions and the feelings of victims are certainly real,” Haenam Police Station said, emphasizing the importance of checking even small transactions carefully before proceeding.
