“대멸종에서도 살아남았다”… 완도수목원, 기후위기 속 ‘생존의 기술’ 특별전

지구 역사 속 대멸종과 기후변화의 격변 속에서도 생명은 살아남았다. 그 생존의 비밀을 조명하는 특별전이 완도에서 열린다.

전라남도 완도수목원은 오는 4월 30일까지 산림박물관 기획전시실에서 기후변화 특별전 ‘생존의 기술’을 개최한다고 밝혔다.
이번 전시는 국립생태원 순회전으로, 기후변화 속에서 살아남은 생물의 다양한 생존 전략과 생태계의 적응 과정을 소개한다.

특별전은 ‘생존–기술–위기’ 세 가지 주제로 구성됐다.
먼저 ‘생존’ 섹션에서는 지구 역사 속에서 발생한 5대 대멸종과 같은 급격한 환경 변화가 생물에게 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지를 살펴본다.
생명체가 사라지고 새로운 종이 등장하는 과정 속에서 생태계가 어떻게 변화해 왔는지를 이해할 수 있다.

이어 ‘기술’ 섹션에서는 극한 환경 속에서도 살아남은 생물의 놀라운 적응 능력과 생존 전략을 소개한다.
환경 변화에 대응하기 위해 진화해 온 생물의 형태적·행동적 특징을 통해 자연의 경이로운 생존 메커니즘을 보여준다.

마지막 ‘위기’ 섹션에서는 현재 인류가 직면한 기후변화 문제를 조명하고, 자연과 인간이 공존하기 위한 지속 가능한 삶의 방향을 제시한다. 기후위기 시대에 우리가 실천해야 할 행동과 생태 보전의 중요성을 함께 생각해 볼 수 있도록 구성됐다.

이번 전시는 단순한 자연 전시를 넘어 기후위기 시대에 생태계와 인간 사회의 지속 가능한 미래를 고민하는 교육형 전시라는 점에서 의미가 크다.

안병석 완도수목원장은 “이번 전시가 기후변화의 심각성을 알리고 산림과 자연의 소중함을 다시 느끼는 계기가 되길 바란다.”며 “관람객들이 일상 속 작은 실천으로 이어지는 기후 행동의 중요성을 생각하는 시간이 되길 기대한다.”고 말했다.

한편 완도수목원은 난대림 생태계를 대표하는 산림교육 공간으로, 다양한 전시와 체험 프로그램을 통해 기후·산림 교육 거점으로 역할을 확대하고 있다.

Life has endured even through mass extinctions and dramatic shifts in the Earth’s climate. A special exhibition exploring the secrets of survival is now opening in Wando.
The Wando Arboretum of Jeollanam-do Province announced that it will hold a climate change-themed special exhibition titled “Technology of Survival” at the planning exhibition hall of the Forest Museum until April 30.
The exhibition is part of a traveling exhibition organized by the National Institute of Ecology, introducing the diverse survival strategies of living organisms that have endured environmental change and the adaptive processes of ecosystems under climate stress.
The exhibition is organized around three themes: “Survival – Technology – Crisis.”
In the “Survival” section, visitors can explore how dramatic environmental changes throughout Earth’s history—such as the five major mass extinctions—have affected living organisms. The section illustrates how ecosystems evolved as some species disappeared while new ones emerged.
The “Technology” section highlights the remarkable adaptive abilities and survival strategies of organisms that have endured extreme environmental conditions. Through examples of evolutionary traits and behaviors developed to cope with environmental change, the exhibition reveals the extraordinary mechanisms of survival found in nature.
The final “Crisis” section focuses on the climate challenges currently facing humanity and presents ideas for sustainable coexistence between nature and people. It encourages visitors to reflect on practical climate actions and the importance of ecosystem conservation in the era of climate crisis.
More than a simple nature exhibition, the event carries broader significance as an educational exhibition that prompts reflection on a sustainable future for both ecosystems and human society in the age of climate change.
Ahn Byeong-seok, Director of Wando Arboretum, said,
“Through this exhibition, we hope visitors will better understand the seriousness of climate change and rediscover the value of forests and nature,” adding,
“We also hope it will inspire meaningful reflection that leads to small climate-friendly actions in everyday life.”
Meanwhile, Wando Arboretum, known for its rich warm-temperate forest ecosystem, continues to expand its role as a regional hub for forest and climate education through various exhibitions and experiential programs.
