“주민 한 명이 산불 막았다”… 해남소방서, ‘소화기 한 대가 지킨 숲’ 긴급 경고

해남소방서(서장 박춘천)는 11일 오후 1시 50분경 황산면 한 야산에서 발생한 화재를 마을 주민이 주택용 소화기 한 대로 초기 진화해 대형 산불로 번지는 것을 막았다고 17일 밝혔다.

소방서에 따르면 황산면을 지나던 주민은 산자락에서 피어오르는 불꽃과 연기를 발견하고 즉시 119에 신고했다.

그는 신고 후 곧바로 차량에 비치해 둔 주택용 소화기로 불길을 제압해 확산을 막았다.

현장에 도착한 소방대와 산불 진화대는 잔불을 정리하고 주변을 확인하는 등 추가 안전조치를 완료했다.

화재 초기 진압에 나선 주민은 “순식간에 불길이 번질 뻔했지만 소화기가 있어 큰 피해를 막을 수 있었다.”며 “마을을 지키기 위해 당연한 일을 했을 뿐”이라고 말했다.

해남소방서는 이번 사례가 보여준 바와 같이 “3분의 초기 대응이 산불의 전체 피해를 좌우한다.”며 경각심을 강조했다.

특히 최근 들어 농부산물·생활쓰레기 소각으로 인한 야외 화재가 잇따라 발생하고 있는 만큼, 주민들의 각별한 주의가 필요하다고 당부했다.

소방서 관계자는 “이번 화재는 소화기와 주민의 신속한 대응이 아니었다면 순식간에 대형 산불로 번질 수 있는 위험한 상황이었다.”며 “모든 가정이 주택용 소방시설을 갖추고 사용법을 숙지해야 한다.”고 말했다.

이어 “소각행위는 작은 불씨라도 강풍에 의해 대규모 산불로 이어질 수 있는 만큼 가을·겨울철 야외 소각을 절대 금지해 달라.”고 재차 강조했다.

해남소방서는 지속적으로 주택용 소화기 보급과 사용법 홍보를 확대하는 한편, 불법 소각 단속과 예방 홍보 활동을 강화할 방침이다.

Haenam Fire Station Issues Urgent Warning: “A Single Fire Extinguisher Saved the Forest”**
Haenam Fire Station (Chief Park Chun-cheon) announced on the 17th that a forest fire that broke out on a hillside in Hwangsan-myeon at around 1:50 p.m. on the 11th was prevented from spreading into a large-scale wildfire thanks to a resident who extinguished the flames early with a household fire extinguisher.
According to the fire station, a resident passing through the Hwangsan-myeon area spotted flames and smoke rising from the mountainside and immediately reported it to 119.
After the report, the resident quickly used a household fire extinguisher kept in his vehicle to suppress the flames and prevent further spread.
When firefighters and forest fire response crews arrived at the scene, they extinguished remaining embers and carried out additional safety measures.
The resident who took part in the initial fire suppression said, “The flames could have spread in an instant, but thankfully I had a fire extinguisher with me,” adding, “I simply did what I felt was my responsibility to protect the village.”
Haenam Fire Station stressed the importance of quick action, noting, “Three minutes of early response determines the entire scale of wildfire damage.”
The station also warned that outdoor fires caused by burning agricultural waste and household garbage have been occurring frequently in recent weeks, urging residents to exercise extreme caution.
A fire station official said, “Without the resident’s quick response and the presence of a fire extinguisher, this fire could have escalated into a large wildfire within minutes,” and emphasized the need for every household to install and learn how to use basic firefighting equipment.
The official added, “Even a small spark from burning debris can turn into a large wildfire when carried by strong winds. We strongly urge residents to avoid all outdoor burning during the fall and winter seasons.”
Haenam Fire Station plans to continue expanding the distribution and education of household fire extinguishers, while strengthening crackdowns on illegal burning and wildfire prevention campaigns.
