해남군, 심적암 항일 의병 전적지 전라남도 기념물 지정

해남군 대흥사 산내 암자 심적암지가 전라남도 기념물로 지정되었다.

광복 80주년을 맞아 지난 14일 「해남 심적암 항일의병 전적」이라는 명칭으로 지정 예고가 이뤄졌다.

심적암지는 일제강점기 1909년 7월, 해남과 완도 일대에서 활동한 의병장 황준성이 이끄는 의병 부대와 대흥사 승려들이 일본군과 맞서 싸운 항일의병 전적지다.

이 전투에서 의병 24명과 승려 5명이 순국했으며, 심적암 건물과 사찰은 전소되었다.

이 전적 이후 해남 지역 주민들의 사회적·민족적 의식은 크게 향상되었고, 1919년 3·1운동 참여와 1935년대 전남운동협의회 결성 등 다양한 독립운동으로 이어졌다.

특히 불교계 무장투쟁 유적으로서 학술적·역사적 가치가 매우 높게 평가된다.

해남군은 2019년 발굴 조사와 사료 연구를 통해 건물지 3동, 우물지 1동, 문지 1곳을 확인하며, 심적암지가 수행도량에서 항일 의병 전적지로 변화한 과정을 체계적으로 밝혀냈다.

군 관계자는 “심적암지는 해남의 불교 문화와 항일정신이 함께 서린 소중한 역사유산”이라며, “전라남도 기념물 지정을 계기로 역사적 가치 보존과 활용에 최선을 다하겠다.”고 전했다.

이번 기념물 지정은 해남군의 역사적 자산을 지역민과 후손에게 알리고, 항일의병 정신 계승과 문화관광 활용의 발판이 될 것으로 기대된다.

Haenam County’s Simjeokam Site of Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army Battles Designated as a Cultural Property of Jeollanam-do
From a Buddhist training center to a frontline base of anti-Japanese resistance, a historic site where 29 volunteers and monks sacrificed their lives
Simjeokam, a hermitage within Daeheungsa Temple in Haenam County, has been designated as a cultural property of Jeollanam-do.
On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Korea’s liberation, the designation was announced on August 14 under the name “Haenam Simjeokam Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army Battle Site.”
Simjeokam is a historic battlefield where, in July 1909 during the Japanese colonial period, a volunteer army led by Hwang Jun-seong—who operated in the Haenam and Wando regions—joined forces with Daeheungsa monks to fight against Japanese troops.
In this battle, 24 volunteers and 5 monks lost their lives, and the Simjeokam buildings and temple were burned down.
Following this battle, the social and national consciousness of Haenam residents significantly increased, leading to participation in the March 1st Movement of 1919 and the establishment of the Jeonnam Movement Association in 1935, among other independence activities.
As a site of armed Buddhist resistance, Simjeokam is highly valued for its academic and historical significance.
In 2019, Haenam County conducted archaeological excavations and historical research, identifying three building sites, one well, and a gate site, systematically clarifying how Simjeokam evolved from a Buddhist training center into a battlefield for anti-Japanese volunteers.
A county official stated, “Simjeokam is a precious historical heritage that embodies Haenam’s Buddhist culture and anti-Japanese spirit. We will make every effort to preserve and utilize its historical value following its designation as a cultural property of Jeollanam-do.”
This designation is expected to raise awareness of Haenam’s historical assets among local residents and future generations and serve as a foundation for promoting the spirit of anti-Japanese volunteers while supporting cultural tourism.
