대한민국 대표 김 전문 식품기업인 성경식품이 진도군에 최첨단 스마트 생산시설을 건립한다.

진도에서 생산한 고품질 물김을 현지에서 직접 수급하고 가공하는 체계가 구축되면서 지역 김 산업이 원물 생산을 넘어 가공과 유통, 수출까지 아우르는 고부가가치 산업으로 전환될지 주목된다.

진도군은 18일 오후 3시 군내농공단지에서 ‘성경식품 제2공장 진도캠퍼스’ 기공식을 열고 본격적인 건립공사에 들어갔다고 밝혔다.

기공식에는 이재각 진도군수와 성경식품 모기업인 삼천리그룹 이찬의 부회장을 비롯해 성경식품 관계자, 김 생산 어민, 지역 주민 등 200여 명이 참석했다.

참석자들은 성경식품 진도캠퍼스가 진도 수산가공산업의 새로운 성장 거점으로 자리 잡아 지역경제 활성화와 김 양식 어가의 소득 증대에 기여하기를 기원했다.

성경식품 제2공장 진도캠퍼스는 청정한 진도 바다에서 생산되는 고품질 물김 원초를 직접 수급해 가공하는 최첨단 스마트 생산시설로 조성된다.

공장이 본격적으로 가동되면 지역 주민 우선 채용을 통한 양질의 일자리 창출과 청년층 유입, 정주인구 증가에도 긍정적인 효과가 있을 것으로 진도군은 기대하고 있다.

지역 김 양식 어민들도 공장 건립에 큰 기대를 나타내고 있다.
진도는 우수한 품질의 물김을 대량으로 생산하고 있지만, 지역 내 마른김 가공시설이 상대적으로 부족해 원초 생산에 머무르는 한계가 있다는 지적을 받아왔다.

성경식품 진도캠퍼스가 완공되면 진도산 물김의 안정적인 대량 소비처가 확보되고, 지역에서 생산된 원초가 현지에서 고부가가치 제품으로 가공될 수 있는 기반이 마련된다.

이에 따라 진도 김 산업의 영역도 기존 생산 중심에서 가공·유통·수출로 확대될 전망이다.

특히 원물의 지역 내 소비와 가공이 활성화되면 김 양식 어가의 판로 안정과 소득 향상은 물론 관련 기업 유치, 일자리 창출 등 지역경제 전반에 파급효과가 나타날 것으로 기대된다.

이재각 진도군수는 “성경식품 제2공장 진도캠퍼스는 민선 9기 진도군이 추진하는 수산가공산업의 고부가가치화와 지역경제 대전환을 이끌 핵심 거점이 될 것”이라고 밝혔다.

이어 “공장이 성공적으로 완공돼 지역 일자리가 늘어나고 김 양식 어가의 소득이 향상될 수 있도록 행정적 지원을 아끼지 않겠다”고 강조했다.

진도군은 성경식품 제2공장 건립을 정부 공모사업으로 선정된 ‘글로벌 김 클러스터 구축사업’과 연계해 민간투자 확대에 나설 방침이다.

군은 2030년까지 군내농공단지 일원에 국비 등을 포함한 총 100억 원을 투입해 용수 공급을 비롯한 기반시설을 확충할 계획이다.

이를 통해 김 생산과 가공, 유통, 수출기업이 집적된 산업 생태계를 구축하고 진도를 대한민국을 대표하는 ‘글로벌 김 수출 전진기지’로 육성한다는 구상이다.

Sungkyung Foods, one of South Korea’s leading Korean seaweed manufacturers, is building an advanced smart production facility in Jindo County.
By establishing a system to directly source and process high-quality fresh seaweed grown in Jindo, the project is expected to help transform the county’s seaweed industry from one focused mainly on raw-material production into a high-value-added sector encompassing processing, distribution and exports.
Jindo County said Sungkyung Foods held a groundbreaking ceremony for its second plant, the “Jindo Campus,” at the Gunnae Agro-Industrial Complex at 3 p.m. on September 18, officially launching construction.
Approximately 200 people attended the ceremony, including Jindo County Governor Lee Jae-gak, Samchully Group Vice Chairman Lee Chan-ui, executives and employees of Sungkyung Foods, local seaweed farmers and residents. Samchully Group is the parent company of Sungkyung Foods.
Participants expressed hopes that the new Jindo facility would become a major growth hub for the county’s seafood-processing industry, revitalize the local economy and increase the incomes of seaweed-farming households.
The Sungkyung Foods Jindo Campus will be developed as a state-of-the-art smart production facility that directly sources and processes high-quality fresh seaweed harvested from Jindo’s clean coastal waters.
Once the plant begins full-scale operations, it is expected to create quality jobs by giving priority to local residents in recruitment. Jindo County also expects the project to help attract younger people and contribute to growth in the county’s resident population.
Local seaweed farmers have also voiced strong expectations for the new plant.
Although Jindo produces large quantities of high-quality fresh seaweed, the county has faced limitations because of a relative shortage of facilities capable of processing it into dried seaweed products. As a result, the local industry has remained heavily dependent on primary production.
Once completed, the Sungkyung Foods Jindo Campus will provide a stable, large-scale buyer for seaweed grown in the county and establish the infrastructure needed to process local raw materials into higher-value products within Jindo.
The project is therefore expected to expand the scope of Jindo’s seaweed industry from production into processing, distribution and exports.
Increasing the local consumption and processing of Jindo-grown seaweed is also expected to stabilize sales channels for farmers, raise household incomes, attract related businesses and create additional jobs, generating broader economic benefits across the region.
“The Sungkyung Foods Jindo Campus will become a key hub driving the transformation of Jindo County’s seafood-processing industry into a high-value-added sector and bringing about a major shift in the local economy under the ninth elected county administration,” Governor Lee Jae-gak said.
“We will provide active administrative support to ensure the plant is completed successfully, creates jobs for local residents and increases the incomes of seaweed-farming households,” he added.
Jindo County plans to link the construction of Sungkyung Foods’ second plant with the Global Gim Cluster Development Project, which was selected through a national government competition, to attract further private-sector investment.
By 2030, the county plans to invest a total of KRW 10 billion, including national government funding, in the Gunnae Agro-Industrial Complex area. The investment will be used to expand essential infrastructure, including industrial water-supply facilities.
Through the project, Jindo County aims to establish an integrated industrial ecosystem bringing together seaweed production, processing, distribution and export businesses and develop Jindo into South Korea’s leading global export hub for Korean seaweed.
Attention is now focused on whether the Sungkyung Foods Jindo Campus can secure stable sales channels for locally harvested seaweed, establish a high-value-added processing base and emerge as a practical growth engine capable of reshaping Jindo’s seaweed industry.
