울돌목에 다시 울리는 ‘명량의 함성’…2026 명량대첩축제 9월 11일 개막

충무공 이순신 장군과 전라도 백성이 13척의 배로 왜군의 대함대를 물리친 역사의 현장 울돌목에서 ‘명량의 함성’이 다시 울려 퍼진다.

전남광주통합특별시는 오는 9월 11일부터 13일까지 3일간 해남과 진도를 잇는 울돌목 일원에서 ‘2026 명량대첩축제’를 개최한다고 밝혔다.

특히 올해 축제에서는 약 1천200명이 해남에서 출정해 진도대교를 건너 진도 주무대까지 행진하는 대규모 출정 퍼레이드가 펼쳐져 명량대첩 당시 조선 수군과 백성들의 결연한 출정 모습을 재현할 예정이다.
명량대첩축제는 1597년 정유재란 당시 이순신 장군을 중심으로 조선 수군과 전라도 백성이 힘을 모아 울돌목에서 거둔 명량대첩의 역사적 승리를 기념하고 호국정신을 계승하기 위한 대표 역사문화축제다.

올해는 개막식과 명량대첩 주제공연을 비롯해 대규모 출정 퍼레이드, 해상 퍼레이드, 전통문화 행사와 축하공연 등 역사와 현대 문화가 어우러진 다양한 프로그램이 마련된다.

■ 임진왜란부터 명량의 승리까지…4막 실감형 공연
개막식은 진도 녹진관광지 주무대에서 열린다.
축제의 백미로 꼽히는 명량대첩 주제공연은 임진왜란 발발에서부터 조선 수군의 재건과 판옥선 집결, 명량해전 승리에 이르는 과정을 총 4막으로 구성한다.
특히 미디어 기술을 활용한 전투 장면과 무술 퍼포먼스 등 다양한 연출기법을 접목한 융복합 실감형 공연으로 제작해 400여 년 전 울돌목에서 벌어진 역사적 순간을 관람객들에게 생생하게 전달할 예정이다.
주제공연은 9월 11일과 12일 오후 7시 30분 진도 주무대에서 열리며 무료로 관람할 수 있다.

■ 해남서 1천200명 출정…진도대교 건너는 대규모 퍼레이드
올해 축제에서 특히 눈길을 끄는 프로그램은 해남과 진도를 하나로 연결하는 대규모 출정 퍼레이드다.
약 1천200명의 참가자가 해남에서 출발해 울돌목을 가로지르는 진도대교를 건너 진도 주무대까지 행진한다.
명량대첩이 이순신 장군과 조선 수군만의 승리가 아니라 전라도 백성들이 함께 만들어낸 승리라는 역사적 의미를 되새기는 상징적인 행사가 될 것으로 기대된다.
바다에서도 장관이 펼쳐진다.
해군과 해양경찰 함정이 참여하는 해상 퍼레이드를 비롯해 수문장 교대식과 전통문화 퍼레이드 등 육상과 해상을 연결한 다양한 볼거리가 관람객을 맞는다.

■ 송가인·김장훈·에녹 출연…울돌목 밤하늘 수놓는다
축제의 밤은 인기 가수들의 공연과 화려한 야간 콘텐츠로 채워진다.
김장훈과 송가인, 에녹 등 인기 가수들이 축하무대에 오르며 울돌목 밤하늘에는 드론 라이트쇼와 해상 회오리 불꽃쇼가 펼쳐진다.
역사와 교육을 접목한 프로그램도 마련된다.
역사전문가 심용환이 참여하는 역사 토크&쇼를 비롯해 청소년 예술대회, K-pop 경연대회, 이순신 장군과 연계한 지역 콘텐츠 등 어린이부터 성인까지 가족 단위 관람객이 함께 즐길 수 있는 프로그램이 진행된다.
축제 마지막 날에는 진도 주무대에서 관람객이 직접 참여하는 ‘개그맨 손헌수의 빵빠레 노래방’이 열리고 인기 가수 전유진과 현진우가 출연하는 ‘명량 트롯 한마당’이 축제의 대미를 장식한다.
■ 통합특별시 출범 후 첫 명량대첩축제
올해 명량대첩축제는 전남광주 통합 이후 처음 개최된다는 점에서도 의미가 있다.
명량대첩축제는 지난 2008년부터 옛 전라남도와 해남군, 진도군이 공동으로 개최해왔으며 울돌목이라는 역사적 공간을 중심으로 두 지역이 함께 만들어가는 대표적인 상생 축제로 자리 잡았다.
전남광주통합특별시는 단순히 관람객을 끌어모으는 행사에 그치지 않고 지역 주민의 참여를 확대하고 지역 고유 콘텐츠와 관광·먹거리·상권을 연결해 축제의 경제적 효과가 해남과 진도 지역에 실질적으로 돌아가도록 한다는 방침이다.
민형배 전남광주통합특별시장은 “2008년부터 옛 전라남도와 진도군·해남군이 공동으로 개최한 명량대첩축제가 올해 전남광주 통합 이후 처음 열리면서 더욱 특별한 의미가 있다”며 “완성도 높은 주제공연과 주민이 자발적으로 참여하는 프로그램, 지역상권에 실질적 도움이 되는 지역 시그니처 콘텐츠 등을 운영해 더욱 내실 있는 축제로 거듭나야 한다.”고 말했다.

올해 명량대첩축제는 명량해전의 역사적 의미를 되새기는 것을 넘어 해남과 진도를 연결하는 체류형 관광 콘텐츠로 발전하고, 축제를 찾는 관광객의 발길을 지역 음식점과 숙박업소, 관광지 등 지역상권 소비로 연결할 수 있을지가 주목된다.

특히 1천200명이 참여하는 출정 퍼레이드가 해남에서 시작되는 만큼 축제 기간 해남 우수영관광지와 울돌목 일대 관광 활성화에도 상당한 도움이 될 것으로 기대된다.

The roar of Myeongnyang will once again echo across Uldolmok, the historic waters where Admiral Yi Sun-sin and the people of Jeolla achieved one of Korea’s most celebrated naval victories against a vastly larger Japanese fleet with only 13 ships.
The Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City announced that the 2026 Myeongnyang Battle Festival will take place for three days, from September 11 to 13, around Uldolmok, the strait connecting Haenam and Jindo.
One of this year’s major highlights will be a massive departure parade involving approximately 1,200 participants. Starting in Haenam, the procession will cross Jindo Bridge and continue to the main festival stage in Jindo, recreating the determination of the Joseon naval forces and local people as they prepared for battle.
The Myeongnyang Battle Festival commemorates the historic victory at Uldolmok during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1597, when Admiral Yi Sun-sin, the Joseon navy and the people of Jeolla joined forces to defeat the invading fleet. The festival is one of the region’s leading historical and cultural events dedicated to preserving and promoting the spirit of patriotism and national defense.
This year’s program will feature an opening ceremony, a signature performance depicting the Battle of Myeongnyang, a large-scale departure parade, a maritime parade, traditional cultural events and celebratory concerts, bringing together history, culture and modern entertainment.
From the Japanese Invasion to Victory at Myeongnyang… A Four-Act Immersive Performance
The opening ceremony will be held on the main stage at the Nokjin Tourist Area in Jindo.
Considered one of the festival’s signature attractions, the Myeongnyang Battle performance will tell the story in four acts, beginning with the outbreak of the Japanese invasion and continuing through the rebuilding of the Joseon navy, the gathering of panokseon warships and the ultimate victory at the Battle of Myeongnyang.
The production will combine multimedia battle sequences, martial arts performances and other advanced staging techniques to create an immersive experience that brings the dramatic events at Uldolmok more than four centuries ago vividly back to life.
The performance will be staged at 7:30 p.m. on September 11 and 12 at the main stage in Jindo. Admission is free.
1,200 Participants Depart from Haenam… Massive Parade Across Jindo Bridge
One of the most anticipated events of this year’s festival will be the large-scale departure parade symbolically connecting Haenam and Jindo.
Approximately 1,200 participants will set out from Haenam and march across Jindo Bridge over Uldolmok before arriving at the main festival stage in Jindo.
The event is intended to highlight the historical significance of the Battle of Myeongnyang as a victory achieved not only by Admiral Yi Sun-sin and the Joseon navy, but also through the courage and participation of the people of Jeolla.
Spectacular scenes will also unfold at sea.
Naval vessels from the Republic of Korea Navy and Korea Coast Guard will participate in a maritime parade, while a royal guard-changing ceremony and traditional cultural parades will provide visitors with a variety of attractions connecting the land and sea.
Song Ga-in, Kim Jang-hoon and Enoch to Perform… Lighting Up the Night Sky over Uldolmok
The festival nights will feature performances by popular singers and spectacular nighttime attractions.
Kim Jang-hoon, Song Ga-in and Enoch will take to the stage for celebratory concerts, while a drone light show and swirling fireworks over the sea will illuminate the night sky above Uldolmok.
Programs combining history and education will also be offered.
Historian Shim Yong-hwan will host a history talk and show, while other events will include a youth arts competition, a K-pop contest and locally developed programs connected to Admiral Yi Sun-sin. The festival is designed to offer entertainment for visitors of all ages, including families with children.
On the final day, the main stage in Jindo will host “Comedian Son Heon-su’s Bbangbbare Karaoke,” an interactive singing event for visitors, followed by the “Myeongnyang Trot Festival,” featuring popular singers Jeon Yu-jin and Hyun Jin-woo, bringing the three-day celebration to a close.
First Myeongnyang Battle Festival Since the Launch of the Integrated Special Metropolitan City
This year’s festival carries additional significance as the first Myeongnyang Battle Festival to be held since the integration of Jeonnam and Gwangju.
Since 2008, the festival has been jointly organized by the former Jeollanam-do Province, Haenam County and Jindo County. Centered around the historic waters of Uldolmok, it has developed into a major regional festival symbolizing cooperation between Haenam and Jindo.
The Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City plans to go beyond simply attracting large numbers of visitors by increasing local participation and connecting the festival with distinctive regional content, tourism, food, accommodations and local businesses so that its economic benefits can be felt directly throughout Haenam and Jindo.
Mayor Min Hyung-bae of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City said, “Since 2008, the Myeongnyang Battle Festival has been jointly organized by the former Jeollanam-do Province, Jindo County and Haenam County. This year’s festival carries even greater significance as the first to be held since the integration of Jeonnam and Gwangju.”
He added, “We must develop the festival into an even more substantial event through high-quality signature performances, programs featuring voluntary participation by local residents, and distinctive regional content that provides tangible benefits to local businesses.”
Beyond commemorating the historical significance of the Battle of Myeongnyang, this year’s festival is expected to serve as an opportunity to develop tourism connecting Haenam and Jindo and to encourage festival visitors to spend more time and money at local restaurants, accommodations and tourist attractions.
With the 1,200-member departure parade beginning in Haenam, expectations are particularly high that the festival will help boost tourism around the Haenam Usuyeong Tourist Area and Uldolmok during the three-day event.
In 1597, at a moment of national crisis, Admiral Yi Sun-sin and the people of Jeolla stood together to defend Uldolmok.
Now, 429 years later, in the autumn of 2026, the roar of Myeongnyang will once again echo across these historic waters.
