픽시 자전거의 위험성

최근 청소년들 사이에 픽시 자전거가 선풍적 인기와 함께 그 위험성이 날이 갈수록 커지고 있다.

픽시 자전거는 특이한 외형과 간편한 구조로 되어있으며, 자전거 프레임이 단순하고 휠이 얇아 속도감이 있어 보이는 데다 멋진 묘기 동작도 가능해 청소년들의 호기심과 모방심리를 자극하기 충분하다.

그런 픽시 자전거는 대부분 브레이크가 장착돼 있지 않다.

이 경우 제동을 하기 위해서는 페달을 반대로 밟거나 바퀴를 강제로 멈추는 스키딩이란 기술을 사용해야 한다.

하지만 이는 상당한 교육과 숙련도를 요구한다.
조금만 실수해도 큰 사고로 이어질 수 있음에도, 청소년들이 이러한 위험성을 제대로 알지 못한 채 무분별하게 이용하고 있다.

법적인 문제도 크다. 도로교통법에 따르면 자전거는 차에 해당하므로, 조향장치와 제동장치, 그 밖의 장치를 정확하게 조작하여야 한다고 규정하고 있다. 이를 위반하면 20만 원 이하의 벌금이나 구류, 과료에 처해질 수 있다.

정부에서는 9월17일부터 스키딩, 풋 브레이킹 등 위험한 방법으로 제동을 함으로써 다른 차마나 보행자에게 위험을 야기한 경우 도로교통법 제50조 제7항에 의거, 제동장치를 제대로 갖추지 않은 픽시 자전거의 도로 주행을 안전운전 의무위반으로 판단하여 집중단속 할 예정이다.

이에 몇가지 안전수칙을 숙지하여 안전에 유념하여야 한다.
첫째, 픽시 자전거는 브레이크가 없어 급제동이 어렵고, 사고시 대형사고로 이어질 수 있기에 매우 위험하다.
둘째, 차량 많은 도로나 밤길, 내리막길에서 주행하지 않도록 하여야 한다.
셋째, 안전모(헬멧) 등 보호장비 반드시 착용하고, 유튜브상 위험한 주행은 절대 모방하여 따라 하지 않도록 한다.
넷째, 사소한 부주의도 큰 사고로 이어질 수 있다는 것을 명심해야한다.

청소년들은 옳고 그름을 판단할 분별력과 가치관이 명확하게 정립되어 있지 않아 합리적인 판단과 의사결정이 어려운 시기다.

그 어느 때보다 자녀의 안전에 대한 학부모님들의 지도와 관심이 절실히 필요하다.
청소년들이 한순간의 실수로 자신의 귀중한 생명을 잃지 않고 원대한 꿈을 펼칠 수 있도록 가정에서 픽시 자전거에 대한 지도편달이 반드시 필요하며 학부모, 학생, 교사, 경찰이 전 방위적으로 함께 힘을 모아 학생들의 안전을 최우선으로 하여 픽시 자전거로 인한 단 한 건의 사고가 발생치 않도록 안전한 교통문화조성에 앞장서야 할 것이다.

In recent days, fixed-gear bicycles—commonly known as fixies—have surged in popularity among teenagers, while concerns over their dangers continue to grow.
Fixie bicycles are characterized by a distinctive appearance and a simple structure. Their minimalist frames and thin wheels give the impression of speed and allow for eye-catching tricks, which easily spark teenagers’ curiosity and desire to imitate.
However, most fixie bicycles do not come equipped with brakes.
To slow down or stop, riders must either pedal backward or use a technique called skidding, which involves forcefully locking the wheels.
This requires considerable training and skill; even a small mistake can lead to serious accidents. Despite these risks, many teenagers use such bicycles indiscriminately, often unaware of the potential dangers.
There are also significant legal issues. Under the Road Traffic Act, bicycles are regarded as vehicles and must be properly equipped with steering and braking systems and operated safely. Violations can result in fines of up to 200,000 KRW, detention, or minor penalties.
Starting September 17, the government will conduct intensive crackdowns on fixie bicycles that lack braking devices. In accordance with Article 50, Clause 7 of the Road Traffic Act, stopping a bicycle through skidding or foot braking in a way that endangers other vehicles or pedestrians will be deemed a violation of safe-driving obligations.
Therefore, it is essential to follow a few safety guidelines:
Fixie bicycles are extremely dangerous because they cannot stop quickly and can cause severe accidents.
Do not ride them on busy roads, at night, or on downhill slopes.
Always wear protective gear such as helmets, and never imitate risky maneuvers seen on YouTube.
Remember that even the slightest carelessness can lead to a serious accident.
Adolescents are at a stage where their sense of judgment and values are still developing, making rational decision-making more difficult.
Parents’ guidance and attention to their children’s safety are therefore more crucial than ever. It is essential for families to provide proper direction and supervision so that teenagers do not risk their lives in a moment of recklessness and can instead pursue their bright futures.
Parents, students, teachers, and the police must work together on all fronts to prioritize student safety and ensure that not a single accident occurs due to fixie bicycles. By doing so, we can foster a safer traffic culture for everyone.
