National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea Hosts Joint Symposium with Three Food Science Societies
Expanding the Utilization of Island Wildlife Resources for Food, Fermentation, and Marine Bioindustries
The National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea (Director Park Jin-young), under the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, announced that it hosted a joint symposium on June 18 at its headquarters under the theme, “Expanding the Utilization of Island Wildlife Resources and Information through Collaboration with Three Food Science Societies.”
The symposium was jointly organized by the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea, the Korean Society of Food Science and Technology, the Korean Society of Food Science and Nutrition, and the Honam Branch of the Korean Society of Food Preservation. Researchers from academia, industry, and research institutes in the fields of food science, fermentation, and marine bioresources participated to discuss the high-value utilization potential of island wildlife resources and future research collaboration opportunities.
The event was held as part of the project titled “Establishment of a Management Infrastructure for the Utilization of Island Wildlife Resources and Information.” Supported by the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute (KEITI), the project is being carried out under the National Life Research Resources Advancement Program involving multiple government ministries.
Through this initiative, the institute is building a comprehensive management system covering the entire process of securing island wildlife resources, standardization, quality control, distribution systems, and the establishment of a utility information database (DB). The goal is to provide a reliable bioresource platform that can be effectively utilized by both researchers and industries.
During the symposium, the institute introduced the operational status of its Island Biological Resource Bank, its collection of biological resources, and its resource information management system. Participants also explored potential applications of these resources in the food and fermentation industries.
Presentations covered a range of cutting-edge research topics, including the fermentation characteristics and functional properties of kimchi fermentation microorganisms, artificial intelligence (AI)-based technologies for analyzing and managing processed food quality, and case studies on the development of food ingredients through the clean processing of marine resources.
Choi Kyung-min, Director of the Island Wildlife Resource Advancement Project Group, stated, “This symposium served as an important platform for sharing the island wildlife resources and information accumulated by the institute with researchers in the food and fermentation sectors, while expanding opportunities for practical applications and collaboration.”
He added, “We will continue to enhance the standardization and information-sharing systems for natural products, microbial cultures, and genetic resources held by the Island Biological Resource Bank so that they can be utilized more broadly across various research and industrial fields.”
Building on the outcomes of this symposium, the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea plans to further strengthen its collaborative network with food-related academic societies and research institutions while advancing its utility information database and expanding external access to island wildlife resources.
