The 2026 Wando Autumn Island Travel Festival officially opened on October 9 at Wando Seaside Park, offering visitors an opportunity to experience the beauty of autumn against the backdrop of pristine seas and picturesque islands.
Hosted by Wando County and organized by the Wando Autumn Island Travel Festival Organizing Committee, the three-day event runs through October 11.
Under the theme “Autumn Colors the Islands, Wando Captures Hearts,” the festival combines Wando's rich marine tourism resources, local specialties, cultural performances and interactive activities to promote the region as an attractive autumn travel destination.
This year's festival features tourism programs connected to Wando's major islands, including Cheongsando, Bogildo and Saengildo, along with abalone tastings, discounted local products, live performances, craft workshops and literary events.
The diverse programs are designed to provide visitors of all ages with memorable experiences while highlighting Wando's distinctive natural and cultural attractions.
■ Autumn Festival Comes Alive at Wando Seaside Park with Family-Friendly Activities
Local television news footage broadcast on October 9 showed colorful experience booths and visitors enjoying the festive atmosphere at Wando Seaside Park.
Under blue, white, pink and turquoise tents, children and their parents participated in hands-on activities while other visitors explored the festival grounds.
Booths featuring themes such as “Bookmark Garden,” “Writing from the Heart to Books” and “Lucky Craft Workshop” attracted attention with activities centered on reading, creativity and handicrafts.
One of the festival's major attractions is the third Autumn Seaside Reading Culture Festival, which offers a variety of family-oriented programs.
According to Wando County's previously announced event plans, an outdoor library featuring approximately 2,000 books has been prepared at the seaside park.
Indian-style tents, parasols and beanbag chairs provide comfortable spaces where visitors can enjoy reading and relaxation while overlooking the ocean.
Hands-on programs include bookmark making, wooden keychain crafting, reading lamp decoration, personalized seaside painting, artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted storybook creation, Wando souvenir making and sketching famous local landmarks.
Additional activities include children's puppet shows, magic performances, balloon art, reading quizzes and picture-book storytelling sessions.
These programs are intended to encourage family participation and create a welcoming cultural environment for visitors of different generations.
■ Cheongsando, Bogildo and Saengildo Showcase Their Unique Autumn Attractions
Unlike festivals centered on a single venue, the Wando Autumn Island Travel Festival extends beyond Wando Seaside Park by connecting visitors with several of the county's renowned islands.
On Cheongsando Island, the program “A Starry Night: Discovering the Milky Way on Cheongsando” offers visitors an opportunity to experience the island's natural surroundings and night sky.
Bogildo Island features “Paradise Within an Island: Staying at Seyeonjeong Pavilion,” a cultural tourism program centered on the historic Seyeonjeong Pavilion.
Saengildo Island also offers a special program titled “Autumn Gifts from Saengildo,” highlighting its natural scenery and distinctive island atmosphere.
Other associated events include autumn trekking along sections 86 to 88 of the Namparang Trail and the Green Forest Festival at Wando Arboretum.
By linking the main festival venue with island-specific tourism programs, Wando County aims to encourage visitors to explore more destinations, extend their stays and contribute to the development of experience-based tourism.
■ From Abalone Tastings to Surprise Auctions: Promoting Wando's Local Specialties
Food is another major highlight of the festival.
Wando, widely recognized for its high-quality abalone, flatfish and seaweed products, is showcasing a variety of regional specialties through tasting events, food markets and promotional sales.
Under the theme “The Delicious Transformation of Wando Abalone,” a dedicated abalone tasting and sales pavilion introduces visitors to a range of abalone dishes.
Surprise auctions and special discount events also provide opportunities to purchase locally produced seafood.
The festival's food zone offers dishes featuring Wando's marine products, including abalone and seaweed bibimbap, butter-grilled abalone and abalone gimbap.
A separate marketplace features agricultural specialties such as loquats and yuzu, while local youth groups and small business owners participate in a flea market.
The event serves as a platform where local producers can interact directly with consumers and promote the quality of Wando's agricultural and marine products.
Wando County hopes the festival will stimulate demand for regional specialties and connect increased tourism activity with local businesses.
■ Concerts, Quizzes and Stamp Tours Encourage Visitor Participation
A wide range of interactive events has been organized to encourage visitors to explore Wando and participate in festival activities.
One of the featured programs is the “Haven't You Been There Yet?” digital tourism stamp tour.
Participants who visit at least five of Wando's 15 designated tourist attractions and receive a completion certificate can obtain abalone products worth approximately 30,000 Korean won.
Other activities include the Wando Island Quiz Tour, a putting challenge and social media photo-verification events.
Live entertainment also adds excitement to the festival.
The opening day on October 9 featured scheduled magic shows, performances by local students and artists, and a celebratory opening concert.
On October 10, singers Gilgu, Kim Gil-jung and Raina are scheduled to perform at the Autumn Island Romantic Concert.
Additional cultural performances and children's entertainment programs will continue throughout the festival period.
These events are intended to provide visitors with diverse entertainment while strengthening the festival's appeal as a family-friendly tourism destination.
■ Beyond Attracting Tourists: Expectations for Local Economic Revitalization
The 2026 Wando Autumn Island Travel Festival is drawing attention for its efforts to combine natural scenery, regional cuisine and cultural content into a comprehensive tourism experience.
In particular, programs encouraging visitors to travel from Wando Seaside Park to nearby islands such as Cheongsando and Bogildo are designed to increase the length of tourist stays and stimulate local spending.
Seafood sales, agricultural specialty markets and flea markets operated by local small businesses are also expected to support economic activity.
However, the festival's actual economic impact will need to be assessed after the event concludes, using objective data such as visitor numbers, accommodation occupancy rates and sales of local products.
Wando County plans to use the festival to expand autumn tourism demand and strengthen its reputation as a destination known for clean marine environments and beautiful island landscapes.
Bringing together autumn seas, scenic islands, literature, cultural performances and regional cuisine, the 2026 Wando Autumn Island Travel Festival aims to offer visitors unforgettable experiences while creating new opportunities for the local tourism industry.
As the festival continues through October 11, attention is focused on whether the event can translate growing tourism interest into sustainable economic benefits for Wando and its island communities.
