“Lighting Up Dark Alleyways”: Haenam Police Install Solar-Powered Safety Lights

Haenam Police Station has teamed up with community groups to install solar-powered safety lights in poorly lit residential alleyways in Haenam-eup. The project aims to ease residents’ concerns about walking at night and provide safer routes home, particularly for women and older people.
According to Haenam Police Station, headed by Chief Park Mi-young, more than 30 participants—including police officers, members of the Eupnae Police Patrol Division’s Community Safety Council, and members of the Eupnae and Nambu volunteer patrol groups—joined the “Firefly Solar Safety Light Installation Project” on October 3.
The Community Safety Council, chaired by Jeong Gwang-hun, donated 40 solar-powered safety lights for the project. Participants surveyed the area and installed the lights in poorly lit residential alleyways along Gugyo 1-gil, Haeri 7-gil and Godo-gil.
The lights charge using solar energy during the day. At night, their LED lamps switch on automatically when motion is detected and turn off afterward. Because they require no external electrical connection, they can provide supplementary lighting in narrow alleyways and other locations where conventional streetlights are difficult to install.
Haenam Police launched the project in Haenam-eup in 2019 and have since expanded it to rural townships. Police work with residents to identify dark alleyways and locations where additional lighting is needed.
A Gugyo 1-gil resident, identified only by the surname Park, said, “The alley is narrow and has no streetlights, so women and older residents felt uneasy walking alone at night. The safety lights have brightened the area and helped reduce that anxiety.”
Park Kwon-hong, head of the Eupnae Police Patrol Division, said, “We expect the solar-powered safety lights to help prevent crime and improve residents’ sense of safety. We will continue
