제35회 초의문화제가 17일 토요일 전야제를 시작으로 18일 일요일 본행사까지 해남 문화예술회관과 군민광장, 대흥사 일원에서 열린다. 초의스님의 차 정신을 기리는 이번 행사에는 차산업 초청 강의와 음악공연, 전국 차단체 찻자리, 초의상 시상식, 전시·체험 프로그램 등이 마련된다.

행사 안내문에 따르면 전야제는 17일 오후 4시 문화예술회관에서 진행되는 제35회 초의상 수상자 고성배의 초청 강의로 문을 연다. 오후 5시까지 이어지는 강의에서는 ‘우리나라 차산업의 현실과 나아가야 할 방향’을 주제로 국내 차산업의 현주소와 발전 방향을 살펴본다.

군민광장에서는 오후 5시 30분부터 6시까지 풍물굿패 ‘해원’의 축하공연이 펼쳐진다. 이어 오후 6시부터 6시 20분까지 다연 회원 10명이 생활차 시연을 선보이며, 오후 6시 20분부터 7시 20분까지 첼로·피리·건반·타악기가 어우러지는 ‘담소’의 앙상블 초청공연이 진행된다.

관내 15개 차단체가 참여하는 ‘별빛 찻자리’는 오후 6시부터 8시 30분까지 운영된다. 관람객들은 차를 맛보며 공연을 즐길 수 있다. 오후 7시부터 8시까지는 족자와 찻잔 등을 상품으로 마련한 관람객 행운권 추첨도 진행된다.

18일 본행사는 대흥사 일원에서 열린다. 오전 10시부터 오후 2시까지 호국대전 앞에서 전국 차 관련 단체 25개 팀이 참여하는 ‘들차회 찻자리’가 운영된다. 찻자리 경연 심사는 낮 12시 40분부터 오후 1시 40분까지 행사장에서 진행된다.

오전 10시부터 10시 30분까지는 풍물굿패 ‘해원’의 길놀이 굿과 일지암 유천수 채수가 각각 이뤄진다. 유천수 채수에는 집행위원장과 주지스님, 초의상 수상자가 참여한다.

특설무대에서는 오전 10시 30분부터 11시까지 다연 회원 10명의 생활차 시연이 진행된다. 이어 오전 11시부터 11시 30분까지 제8회 전국차도구공모전 시상식이 열린다.

오전 11시 30분부터 낮 12시 30분까지 대흥사 경내 공양간에서 오찬이 마련된다. 낮 12시 50분부터 오후 1시 20분까지는 풍물굿패 ‘해원’의 기념공연이 이어진다.

오후 1시 20분부터 1시 30분까지는 대흥사 법설스님이 집전하는 유천수 전수식과 길놀이 굿이 진행된다. 오후 1시 35분부터 1시 50분까지 한듬어린이집 원아들이 ‘아름다운 찻자리 시연’을 선보인다.

기념식은 오후 2시 특설무대에서 시작된다. 개회선언과 국민의례, 한글 반야심경 봉독을 포함한 삼귀의례, 선고다인 헌다례, 육법공양 등이 진행된다. 초의문화제 경과보고와 초의스님 행장보고에 이어 환영사·기념사·축사·격려사가 예정돼 있다.

초의상 시상과 수상자 공적보고는 오후 3시 3분부터 3시 10분까지 진행된다. 이어 오후 3시 10분부터 3시 15분까지 수상자인 박인원·고성배가 소감을 발표한다. 오후 3시 15분부터 찻자리 경연대회 시상이 이뤄지며, 참석자 전원이 함께하는 사홍서원과 식후행사를 끝으로 오후 3시 30분 폐회한다.

부대행사로는 해남청자 다구 특별전과 제8회 전국차도구공모전 수상작 전시가 마련된다.

떡차·찻잔 만들기와 족자 그리기 체험이 운영되며, 수제차와 차도구, 농수특산물 판매장도 열린다.

The 35th Choui Cultural Festival will take place at the Haenam Culture and Arts Center, County Residents’ Plaza, and Daeheungsa Temple, beginning with a pre-festival celebration on Saturday the 17th and continuing with the main program on Sunday the 18th. Honoring the tea tradition and spirit of Buddhist monk Choui, the festival will feature a guest lecture on the tea industry, musical performances, tea gatherings hosted by tea organizations from across Korea, the Choui Award ceremony, exhibitions, and hands-on activities.
According to the event program, the pre-festival celebration will open at 4 p.m. on the 17th with a guest lecture by Go Seong-bae, a recipient of the 35th Choui Award, at the Culture and Arts Center. Running until 5 p.m., the lecture will address “The Current State of Korea’s Tea Industry and Its Future Direction.”
At the County Residents’ Plaza, traditional percussion ensemble Haewon will give a celebratory performance from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Ten members of Dayeon will then demonstrate everyday tea preparation and serving from 6 to 6:20 p.m. Ensemble Damso will perform from 6:20 to 7:20 p.m., combining cello, piri—a traditional Korean wind instrument—keyboard, and percussion.
The “Starlight Tea Gathering,” featuring 15 local tea organizations, will run from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Visitors can sample tea while enjoying the performances. A prize drawing will also take place from 7 to 8 p.m., with prizes including hanging scrolls and teacups.
The main program will be held at Daeheungsa Temple on the 18th. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., 25 teams representing tea organizations nationwide will host outdoor tea gatherings in front of Hoguk Daejeon Hall. Judging for the outdoor tea gathering competition will take place at the event grounds from 12:40 to 1:40 p.m.
From 10 to 10:30 a.m., Haewon will perform a traditional processional percussion ritual, while water will be collected from Yucheonsu Spring at Iljiam Hermitage. The water collection ceremony will involve the festival executive committee chair, the temple’s abbot, and Choui Award recipients.
On the special stage, ten Dayeon members will demonstrate everyday tea preparation and serving from 10:30 to 11 a.m. The awards ceremony for the 8th National Tea Utensil Competition will follow from 11 to 11:30 a.m.
Lunch will be served at the temple dining hall from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Haewon will then give a commemorative performance from 12:50 to 1:20 p.m.
From 1:20 to 1:30 p.m., Venerable Beopseol of Daeheungsa Temple will officiate at the ceremonial handover of water from Yucheonsu Spring, accompanied by a processional percussion performance. Children from Handeum Daycare Center will present a “Beautiful Tea Gathering” demonstration from 1:35 to 1:50 p.m.
The commemorative ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. on the special stage. The program includes the opening declaration, national protocol observances, the Three Refuges ceremony with a Korean-language recitation of the Heart Sutra, a tea offering honoring departed tea masters, and the Six Offerings ritual. Reports on the festival’s history and Venerable Choui’s life will be followed by welcoming, commemorative, congratulatory, and encouragement addresses.
The Choui Award presentation and a report on the recipients’ achievements will take place from 3:03 to 3:10 p.m. Award recipients Park In-won and Go Seong-bae will deliver their acceptance remarks from 3:10 to 3:15 p.m. The tea gathering competition awards will begin at 3:15 p.m. The event will conclude at 3:30 p.m., following a collective recitation of the Four Great Vows and a closing performance.
Additional attractions include a special exhibition of Haenam celadon tea ware and a display of award-winning works from the 8th National Tea Utensil Competition.
Visitors can also take part in compressed tea making, teacup making, and hanging-scroll painting. Handmade tea, tea utensils, and local agricultural, fisheries, and specialty products will be available for purchase.
