There Is a Person Behind the Screen

Smartphones have become an indispensable part of young people’s daily lives and an important space for communication. They allow teenagers to talk with friends, share information, and easily stay connected with one another. However, along with this convenience comes a new risk: cyberbullying.
Cyberbullying can take many forms, including insulting or defaming someone online, deliberately excluding or mocking a student in a group chat, or sharing another person’s photos or personal information without permission.
In online spaces, it is especially difficult to see another person’s facial expressions or emotions directly. As a result, people may not realize how deeply a casual remark or action can hurt someone else.
“It was just a joke.”
“Everyone else was laughing, too.”
“I only said it online. What’s the big deal?”
Thinking this way can lead people to underestimate the seriousness of cyberbullying. But there is a real person with real feelings behind every screen.
A remark that someone thinks can simply be laughed off may remain in another person’s mind all day as a painful wound. Once a photo or written post spreads online, it can quickly be copied and shared, potentially causing harm that is extremely difficult to undo.
To prevent cyberbullying, we need to develop the habit of thinking twice before posting something or sending a message.
“Would I say this if I were standing face-to-face with this person?”
“Would this still be acceptable if I considered it from the other person’s point of view?”
Simply asking ourselves these two questions can help prevent unnecessary conflict and harm.
It is also important not to remain a passive bystander when witnessing cyberbullying. Leaving comments simply because something seems funny, or resharing photos and videos, can further amplify the harm.
Those who experience cyberbullying should not try to deal with it alone. They should seek help from trusted adults such as parents, teachers, or School Police Officers and receive the support and protection they need.
School Police Officers also work to help students understand the basic etiquette and responsibilities they should observe in cyberspace through school violence prevention education and various awareness activities. These efforts are aimed at fostering a safer and healthier online culture.
There is no need to put down the smartphone altogether. What matters is that, as we use smartphones, we also remember to respect others and take responsibility for our own words and actions.
There is a person behind the screen.
We must remember that every word we post and every action we take online can have a profound impact on someone else.
If each of us develops the simple habit of respecting others and thinking once more before speaking or acting online, together we can build a healthy digital culture free from cyberbullying.
