“어르신들이 많이 이용하는 농기계와 이륜차는 물론 야간 보행 때도 각별한 주의가 필요합니다.”

해남경찰이 농촌지역 고령자와 보행자 등 교통약자의 사고를 예방하기 위해 마을 현장을 직접 찾아가는 교통안전 활동에 나섰다.

해남경찰서(서장 박미영) 화산파출소(소장 이홍주)는 최근 지역 내 마을회관과 경로당 등을 방문해 고령자와 보행자를 대상으로 교통안전 수칙을 안내하고 사고 위험지역을 점검하는 ‘찾아가는 교통안전 활동’을 실시했다고 16일 밝혔다.

이번 활동은 농촌지역의 경우 고령층이 보행보조 전동차와 농기계, 이륜차 등을 이용하는 경우가 많고 야간이나 이른 새벽 시간대에는 운전자의 시야 확보가 어려워 사고 위험이 커질 수 있다는 점을 고려해 마련됐다.

경찰은 특히 어르신들이 일상생활에서 반드시 지켜야 할 교통안전 수칙을 중심으로 교육을 진행했다.

횡단보도를 건널 때는 차량이 오는지 좌우를 충분히 살핀 뒤 이동하고, 야간 외출 때는 운전자가 쉽게 식별할 수 있도록 밝은색 옷을 착용할 것을 당부했다.

농기계와 이륜차 운행 때는 안전모 등 보호장구를 반드시 착용하고, 음주 후에는 농기계나 이륜차를 운전하지 않도록 주의를 당부했다.

단순한 교통안전 홍보에 그치지 않고 마을 주변의 실제 사고 위험요인을 찾아내는 현장 점검도 병행했다.

경찰은 사고 위험성이 높은 도로와 마을 진·출입로를 살펴보고 보행자의 안전을 위협할 가능성이 있는 교통시설물과 운전자 시야를 가리는 요소 등이 있는지도 확인했다.

농촌지역은 고령자가 도보뿐 아니라 이륜차와 농기계, 보행보조 전동차 등 다양한 이동수단을 이용하는 만큼 주민들의 안전수칙 준수와 함께 마을 주변 도로환경에 대한 지속적인 점검도 중요하다.

특히 농번기에는 농기계의 도로 운행이 늘어날 수 있어 운전자 역시 농촌 마을과 농로 주변을 통과할 때 속도를 줄이고 고령 보행자나 농기계의 갑작스러운 진입에 대비할 필요가 있다.

이홍주 화산파출소장은 “교통사고 예방을 위해서는 경찰의 단속과 홍보뿐만 아니라 지역주민 모두의 관심과 실천이 중요하다”며 “앞으로도 교통약자를 직접 찾아가는 맞춤형 교통안전 활동을 지속적으로 실시해 안전한 지역사회를 만들어나가겠다”고 밝혔다.

“Extra caution is essential not only when elderly residents use farm machinery and motorcycles, but also when they are walking at night.”
Haenam police have launched an outreach campaign in rural communities aimed at preventing traffic accidents involving elderly residents, pedestrians and other vulnerable road users.
The Hwasan Police Substation, headed by Chief Lee Hong-ju under the Haenam Police Station led by Chief Park Mi-young, said on Sept. 16 that officers recently visited village halls and senior centers to provide traffic safety guidance to elderly residents and pedestrians while also inspecting areas considered at risk of traffic accidents.
The initiative was organized in consideration of the characteristics of rural communities, where many elderly residents rely on mobility scooters, farm machinery and motorcycles for transportation. The risk of accidents can also increase at night and in the early morning when visibility is limited.
Police focused their education on practical traffic safety rules that elderly residents can follow in their daily lives.
Residents were advised to carefully look both ways for approaching vehicles before crossing at crosswalks. When going outside at night, they were encouraged to wear bright-colored clothing so that drivers can see them more easily.
Police also stressed the importance of wearing helmets and other protective equipment when operating motorcycles and farm machinery, while strongly warning residents against operating such vehicles after drinking alcohol.
The campaign went beyond safety education and included on-site inspections to identify potential hazards around local villages before they lead to accidents.
Officers inspected accident-prone roads and village entrances and exits, checking traffic facilities and other obstacles that could threaten pedestrian safety or obstruct drivers’ visibility.
Because elderly residents in rural communities use a wide range of transportation methods—including walking, motorcycles, farm machinery and mobility scooters—continued attention is needed not only to compliance with safety rules but also to maintaining safer road conditions around villages.
During busy farming seasons in particular, farm machinery is more frequently driven on public roads. Motorists traveling through rural villages and near farm roads are therefore advised to reduce their speed and remain alert for elderly pedestrians and farm machinery that may enter the roadway unexpectedly.
“Preventing traffic accidents requires not only police enforcement and public awareness efforts, but also the attention and participation of everyone in the community,” Chief Lee Hong-ju said. “We will continue to provide customized traffic safety programs by reaching out directly to vulnerable road users and work toward building a safer community.”
