전국의 초·중·고등학생들이 글과 그림, 붓글씨를 통해 나라사랑의 의미를 되새기는 ‘제32회 나라사랑 글쓰기 및 사생대회’가 오는 10월 16일 오전 10시부터 오후 3시까지 해남 대흥사 경내에서 열린다.
행사 홍보물에 따르면 이번 대회는 (사)서산대사호국정신선양회가 주최하고 대한불교조계종 제22교구 본사 대흥사가 주관한다. 참가 학생들에게는 물과 간식, 점심, 기념품 등이 제공될 예정이다.
■ 서산대사의 호국정신, 청소년에게 잇는다
이 대회가 일반적인 학생 백일장과 다른 점은 출발점에 ‘호국정신’과 ‘나라사랑’이 자리하고 있다는 것이다.
지난해 제31회 대회 공식 계획에는 추진 목적으로 ▲서산대사의 호국정신과 업적의 체계화 및 선양 ▲현대사회에서 나라사랑의 의미와 역할 재정립 ▲참가 학생들의 특기·적성 개발과 진로 개척 능력 배양이 명시됐다.
즉 학생들에게 단순히 글을 잘 쓰고 그림을 잘 그리는 능력을 겨루게 하는 데 그치지 않고, ‘오늘날 나라를 사랑한다는 것은 무엇인가’라는 질문을 스스로 생각하고 표현하게 하는 것이 대회의 중요한 취지다.
대흥사는 왜 ‘호국불교의 성전’인가
대회가 열리는 대흥사는 우리나라 호국불교 역사에서 상징성이 큰 사찰이다.
임진왜란 당시 승려의 신분으로 의승군을 일으켜 나라를 지키는 데 앞장섰던 서산대사 청허 휴정(1520~1604)의 의발이 전해지는 호국본찰이다. 대흥사에는 서산대사의 금란가사와 발우가 전해지고 있으며 경내 표충사에는 서산대사와 사명대사, 처영대사의 영정이 봉안돼 있다.
특히 대흥사에는 호국 의승들의 희생과 정신을 기리고 후대에 전하기 위한 ‘호국대전’이 건립돼 있다. 국가유산청 사업으로 추진된 호국대전은 7년에 걸친 공사 끝에 완공됐으며, 호국 의승을 추념하는 공간이자 미래 세대에게 호국정신을 교육하는 장소로 의미를 갖는다.
이 때문에 대흥사에서 열리는 나라사랑 글쓰기 및 사생대회는 서산대사와 의승군의 역사적 호국정신을 청소년 세대의 언어와 예술로 이어가는 행사라는 점에서 의미가 크다.
■ 2026년은 ‘제32회’…30년 넘은 청소년 대회
올해 대회는 제32회다.
대흥사 공식 홈페이지에는 2025년 제31회 나라사랑 글쓰기 및 사생대회 개최와 수상자 발표 기록이 확인된다.
역사도 상당하다. 2015년 서산대사 탄신 495주년 제향 당시 이미 제21회 전국 나라사랑 글쓰기·사생대회가 열렸으며 전국 초·중·고 학생 1,000여 명이 참가했다.
2023년 제29회, 2024년 제30회, 2025년 제31회에 이어 올해 제32회로 이어지는 셈이다. 2023년 제29회 대회에서는 대상인 문화체육관광부장관상을 비롯해 글쓰기·서예·그림 분야 수상자가 배출됐다.
운문·산문·그림·서예…학생 재능 펼친다
올해 홍보물에 명시된 대회 분야는 운문·산문·그림·서예다.
지난해 제31회 공식 계획에서도 운문, 산문, 그림(수묵화 포함), 서예 등 4개 부문으로 진행됐다.
따라서 문학에 관심 있는 학생은 시 등 운문이나 산문으로, 미술에 재능이 있는 학생은 그림으로, 전통 붓글씨에 관심 있는 학생은 서예를 통해 자신의 생각과 나라사랑의 의미를 표현할 수 있다.
참가 대상은 전국 초·중·고등학교에 재학 중인 학생이다.
최고의 영예는 ‘문화체육관광부장관상’
관심을 끄는 부분은 수상 규모다.
지난해 제31회 공식 대회 계획에 따르면 문화체육관광부장관상과 대한불교조계종 총무원장상을 비롯해 전남교육감상, 전남도지사상, 해군 제3함대사령관상, 해남교육지원청교육장상, 해남군수상, 대흥사주지상 등이 마련됐다.
이 가운데 역대 대회에서 대상은 문화체육관광부장관상으로 시상돼 왔다.
2023년 제29회에서는 박시헌 학생이 대상인 문체부장관상을 받았으며, 2024년 제30회에서는 해남제일중 허정민 학생이 대상을 차지해 당시 유인촌 문화체육관광부 장관이 직접 시상했다.
다만 2026년 제32회 세부 상격과 부문별 수상 인원은 제공된 홍보물에 구체적으로 적혀 있지 않아, 올해도 문체부장관상이 최종 대상인지 여부는 주최 측의 2026년도 공식 대회계획을 통해 최종 확인할 필요가 있다.

■ ‘글쓰기 대회’ 넘어 살아있는 호국 역사교육
나라사랑 글쓰기 및 사생대회가 30년 넘게 이어지고 있다는 점은 지역 문화행사를 넘어선 의미를 갖는다.
대흥사는 스스로를 ‘호국과 차(茶)의 성지’로 소개하고 있으며, 서산대사와 표충사, 호국대전 등 호국불교의 역사적 자산을 간직하고 있다.
특히 임진왜란이라는 국가적 위기에서 의승군을 이끌었던 서산대사의 정신을 교과서 속 역사에만 머물게 하지 않고 학생들이 직접 글을 쓰고 그림을 그리고 붓을 잡으며 생각하게 한다는 데 대회의 교육적 가치가 있다.

Elementary, middle and high school students from across South Korea will gather at Daeheungsa Temple in Haenam on October 16 for the 32nd National Patriotism Writing and Art Contest, an event designed to encourage young people to reflect on the meaning of patriotism through writing, painting and calligraphy.
The contest will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, October 16, 2026, throughout the grounds of Daeheungsa Temple.
According to promotional materials, the event is hosted by the Seosan Daesa Patriotic Spirit Promotion Association and organized by Daeheungsa Temple, the head temple of the 22nd District of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. Water, snacks, lunch and commemorative gifts are scheduled to be provided to participants.

What distinguishes this competition from an ordinary student writing or art contest is its emphasis on patriotism and the historic tradition of national defense.
The official plan for the 31st contest last year identified its key objectives as systematically preserving and promoting the patriotic spirit and achievements of Great Master Seosan, redefining the meaning and role of patriotism in contemporary society, and helping participating students develop their individual talents, aptitudes and career potential.
The contest therefore goes beyond simply determining who writes, paints or practices calligraphy best.

Why Daeheungsa Is a Sacred Place in Korea’s Patriotic Buddhist Tradition
Daeheungsa Temple, where the competition is held, occupies a particularly important place in the history of Korean Buddhism and the country’s tradition of national defense.
The temple preserves the spiritual legacy of Cheongheo Hyujeong, better known as Great Master Seosan (1520–1604), who organized and led an army of Buddhist monks to defend the country during the Japanese invasions of Korea in the late 16th century.
Daeheungsa preserves important relics associated with Seosan, including his gold-threaded monastic robe and alms bowl.
Inside the temple grounds, Pyochungsa Shrine enshrines portraits of Great Master Seosan as well as renowned monk commanders Samyeong and Cheoyeong, commemorating their contributions to the defense of the nation.
Daeheungsa is also home to the Hoguk Daejeon, a memorial hall established to honor the sacrifice and spirit of the Buddhist monk soldiers who fought to defend Korea and to pass their legacy on to future generations.
The facility was completed after a seven-year construction project promoted with support from the national cultural heritage authorities.
Against this historical backdrop, the National Patriotism Writing and Art Contest carries significance beyond that of a conventional youth cultural event. It serves as an opportunity to connect the centuries-old patriotic legacy of Great Master Seosan and Korea’s Buddhist monk soldiers with the language, thoughts and artistic expression of young people today.
2026 Marks the 32nd Contest
This year’s event marks the 32nd edition of the competition.
Daeheungsa’s official records show that the 31st National Patriotism Writing and Art Contest was held in 2025, followed by the announcement of its award winners.
The history of the competition stretches back more than three decades.
In 2015, when ceremonies were held to commemorate the 495th anniversary of Great Master Seosan’s birth, the 21st National Patriotism Writing and Art Contest was already being held, attracting around 1,000 elementary, middle and high school students from across the country.
The 29th contest was held in 2023, followed by the 30th in 2024 and the 31st in 2025. The event will therefore celebrate its 32nd edition in 2026.
Poetry, Prose, Painting and Calligraphy
According to this year’s promotional materials, the contest consists of four categories: poetry, prose, painting and calligraphy.
The 31st contest was similarly organized into poetry, prose, painting—including traditional ink painting—and calligraphy.
Students interested in literature can participate in the poetry or prose categories, while those with artistic talent can express their ideas through painting. Students interested in Korea’s traditional brush-writing culture can compete in calligraphy.
The competition is open to elementary, middle and high school students currently enrolled in schools anywhere in South Korea.
Highest Honor Traditionally Presented as the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award
The scale and prestige of the awards have also attracted considerable attention.
According to the official plan for the 31st contest, honors included the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award, the President of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism Award, as well as awards presented by the provincial education superintendent, provincial governor, commander of the Republic of Korea Navy’s Third Fleet, superintendent of the Haenam Office of Education, Haenam County governor and the head monk of Daeheungsa Temple.
In previous competitions, the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award has been presented as the grand prize, representing the event’s highest honor.
At the 29th contest in 2023, student Park Si-heon received the grand prize and the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award.
At the 30th contest in 2024, Heo Jeong-min of Haenam Jeil Middle School won the grand prize and received the award from then Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Yoo In-chon.
However, the promotional materials currently available for the 32nd contest in 2026 do not specify the complete award structure or the number of winners in each category. Therefore, whether the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award will again serve as the top prize this year should be confirmed through the organizers’ final official competition guidelines.
More Than a Writing Contest—A Living Lesson in History
The fact that the National Patriotism Writing and Art Contest has continued for more than 30 years gives the event significance beyond that of a regional cultural festival.
Daeheungsa describes itself as a historic center of patriotism and Korean tea culture, preserving a rich heritage associated with Great Master Seosan, Pyochungsa Shrine and the Hoguk Daejeon.
Its educational value lies in allowing young people to experience the history of Great Master Seosan and the Buddhist monk soldiers not merely as events recorded in textbooks, but as a living legacy they can contemplate and reinterpret themselves.
Students will write, draw and practice calligraphy while standing in the very place where that historical legacy has been preserved for generations.
