잠시 집을 나선 부모님이 돌아오지 않는다면 가족들이 겪게 될 불안은 이루 말할 수 없다.

고령화가 빠르게 진행되면서 치매환자의 실종 문제는 더 이상 남의 이야기가 아니다. 특히 치매환자는 길을 잃은 뒤 자신의 이름이나 주소, 가족의 연락처 등을 정확하게 기억하지 못하는 경우가 있어 실종 발생 초기 신속한 발견과 신원 확인이 무엇보다 중요하다.

이처럼 예기치 못한 실종에 대비할 수 있는 제도가 경찰의 ‘지문 등 사전등록’​이다.

지문 등 사전등록은 실종에 대비해 대상자의 지문과 사진, 보호자 연락처 등 신상정보를 미리 등록해 두고 실제 실종 상황이 발생했을 때 등록된 정보를 활용해 신원을 신속하게 확인할 수 있도록 하는 제도다.

등록 대상은 18세 미만 아동을 비롯해 지적·자폐성·정신장애인과 치매환자 등이다.

등록 절차도 어렵지 않다. 가까운 경찰서나 지구대·파출소를 방문해 신청할 수 있으며, 안전Dream을 통해서도 관련 절차를 확인하고 신청할 수 있다.

특히 치매환자의 경우 잠깐의 배회가 예상보다 긴 실종으로 이어질 가능성이 있다.

시간이 지날수록 이동 범위가 넓어질 수 있고 가족들의 불안은 물론 경찰의 수색에도 어려움이 커질 수 있다. 따라서 실종이 발생하기 전에 지문과 사진, 보호자 연락처 등 필요한 정보를 등록해 두는 것이 중요하다.

사전등록이 돼 있다면 경찰이 실종자를 발견했을 때 본인이 자신의 이름이나 주소를 제대로 설명하지 못하는 상황에서도 등록된 정보를 활용해 신원을 확인하고 보호자에게 신속하게 인계하는 데 도움을 받을 수 있다.

실종은 발생한 뒤 찾는 것만큼이나 발생하기 전에 대비하는 것이 중요하다.

어린 자녀를 위한 준비뿐만 아니라 기억력이 떨어지고 길을 잃을 위험이 있는 부모님을 위한 사전 준비에도 관심을 가져야 한다.

가족이 함께 지문 등 사전등록 여부를 확인하고 필요한 정보를 미리 등록해 두는 작은 실천이 실종사건 발생 시 소중한 골든타임을 확보하는 첫걸음이 될 수 있다.

What would happen if an elderly parent stepped out of the house for a short while and did not return? The anxiety and fear experienced by the family would be difficult to put into words.
As society continues to age, cases involving missing people with dementia are no longer someone else’s problem. In particular, people with dementia may become lost and be unable to accurately remember their name, address or a family member’s contact information. For this reason, quickly locating and identifying them during the early stages of a missing-person case is critically important.
One way to prepare for such an unexpected situation is the police Fingerprint and Personal Information Pre-Registration System.
The system allows fingerprints, photographs, guardian contact information and other identifying details to be registered in advance. If a registered person later goes missing, police can use the information to quickly establish the person’s identity.
Those eligible for the program include children under the age of 18, people with intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorders or mental disabilities, and people with dementia.
The registration process is relatively simple. Applications can be made by visiting a nearby police station, police substation or local police box. Information on registration procedures and applications is also available through Safety Dream.
For people with dementia in particular, even a brief episode of wandering can develop into a prolonged missing-person case.
As more time passes, the person may travel farther from home, increasing both the family’s anxiety and the difficulty of police search operations. This is why it is important to register fingerprints, photographs, guardian contact details and other necessary information before an emergency occurs.
If the person has been pre-registered, police can use the stored information to identify them even when they are unable to provide their own name or address. This can help authorities contact their guardian and reunite them with their family more quickly.
When it comes to missing-person cases, preparation before an incident occurs can be just as important as the search itself.
Families should consider advance preparations not only for young children but also for elderly parents who may experience memory loss or be at risk of becoming disoriented.
Taking a few moments as a family to check whether vulnerable loved ones are registered—and completing the registration if necessary—can be an important first step toward protecting the critical “golden time” following a disappearance.
