“신에게는 아직 열두 척의 배가 남아 있사옵니다.”

429년 전 절체절명의 위기에서 나라를 구했던 명량의 승전 함성이 다시 울돌목을 깨웠다.

13척의 배로 133척의 왜선을 물리친 이순신 장군과 조선 수군, 이름 없는 민초들의 호국정신을 기리는 대한민국 대표 역사·문화축제 ‘2026 명량대첩축제’가 11일 진도와 해남을 잇는 울돌목 일원에서 화려한 막을 올렸다.

전남광주통합특별시와 진도군, 해남군이 공동 주최하고 전라남도관광재단이 주관하는 이번 축제는 오는 13일까지 사흘간 명량대첩의 역사적 현장을 무대로 해전 재현과 출정 퍼레이드, 군함 해상 퍼레이드, 드론 라이트쇼, 불꽃쇼, 전통문화 공연 등 다채로운 프로그램으로 펼쳐진다.

명량대첩은 1597년 정유재란 당시 이순신 장군이 압도적인 전력 차이를 극복하고 조선 수군을 승리로 이끈 세계 해전사에서도 손꼽히는 전투다.

특히 명량해전은 이순신 장군과 조선 수군뿐 아니라 울돌목 일대 민초들이 함께 힘을 모아 국난을 극복했다는 점에서 오늘날까지 호국과 공동체 정신을 상징하는 역사로 평가받고 있다.

축제 첫날부터 울돌목은 거대한 출정의 함성으로 뒤덮였다.
진도·해남군민과 관광객 등 1,200여 명이 진도대교를 함께 행진하는 대규모 출정 퍼레이드에 참여하면서 사흘간의 축제 시작을 알렸다.
개막식에서는 축제의 시작과 판옥선 출정을 상징하는 퍼포먼스에 이어 대표 주제공연인 ‘융복합 실감형 명량해전’​이 펼쳐졌다.

무대는 실제 명량대첩이 벌어졌던 울돌목을 배경으로 꾸며졌다.
판옥선 뱃머리를 형상화한 주무대와 특수무대 장치, 박진감 넘치는 전투 액션이 어우러지면서 429년 전 울돌목에서 펼쳐졌던 치열한 명량해전의 순간을 실감 나게 되살렸다.

특히 어렵게 느껴질 수 있는 역사적 이야기를 공연과 액션, 실감형 연출로 풀어내 어린이를 동반한 가족 단위 관광객도 쉽게 명량대첩의 의미를 이해할 수 있도록 구성했다.
‘융복합 실감형 명량해전’은 12일 저녁 진도 주무대에서 한 차례 더 펼쳐진다.

해가 지자 축제의 무대는 울돌목 바다에서 밤하늘로 옮겨갔다.
드론 라이트쇼가 울돌목 밤하늘을 화려하게 수놓았고, 가수 김장훈의 축하공연과 해상 회오리 불꽃쇼가 잇따라 펼쳐지면서 개막 첫날의 열기를 절정으로 끌어올렸다.

주말인 12일과 13일에는 프로그램이 더욱 풍성해진다.
해군·해경 군함의 해상 퍼레이드는 축제 기간 매일 펼쳐져 관광객들에게 또 다른 볼거리를 제공한다.

12일에는 ‘융복합 실감형 명량해전’을 비롯해 역사학자 심용환의 토크&쇼, 청소년 K-POP 댄스 경연대회, 중국 장쑤성 예술단 교류공연 등이 이어진다.

이어 송가인과 에녹이 무대에 오르는 ‘명량 트롯한마당’​이 펼쳐져 울돌목의 밤을 뜨겁게 달굴 예정이다.

축제 마지막 날인 13일에는 손헌수와 함께하는 ‘빵빠레 노래방’을 시작으로 전유진·현진우가 출연하는 ‘명량 트롯한마당’, 평화의 만가행렬 등이 차례로 이어지며 사흘간의 대장정을 마무리한다.

축제장 곳곳에서는 남도의 역사와 전통문화를 직접 느낄 수 있는 공연도 이어진다.

수문장 교대식을 비롯해 강강술래, 소포걸굿농악, 승전의 북놀이 퍼레이드 등이 펼쳐지며, 충무공 활쏘기와 이순신 밥상, 장군복 입기, 조선수군 체험, 포토존 등 남녀노소가 함께 참여할 수 있는 프로그램도 마련됐다.

올해 명량대첩축제의 가장 큰 의미는 단순히 429년 전 승전을 재현하는 데 그치지 않고, 압도적인 열세 속에서도 포기하지 않았던 이순신 장군과 조선 수군, 민초들의 정신을 오늘의 시대정신으로 되살리는 데 있다.

13척 대 133척.
숫자만 놓고 보면 승리를 기대하기 어려운 싸움이었다. 그러나 이순신 장군은 울돌목의 거센 물살을 읽었고, 조선 수군과 민초들은 끝까지 물러서지 않았다.
그렇게 불가능해 보였던 전투는 역사적인 승리로 기록됐다.

민형배 전남광주통합특별시장은 “명량대첩은 이순신 장군과 조선 수군, 민초들이 불가능을 가능으로 바꾼 자랑스러운 승리의 역사”라며 “명량의 승리 정신이 오늘날에도 이어져 전남광주 통합과 반도체 산업 투자 유치 등 새로운 성취와 도약의 역사를 써 내려가고 있는 만큼, 더 큰 미래로 힘차게 나아가겠다.”고 말했다.

The cries of victory that saved the nation from a desperate crisis 429 years ago are once again echoing across Uldolmok.
The 2026 Myeongnyang Great Battle Festival, one of South Korea’s leading historical and cultural festivals commemorating Admiral Yi Sun-sin, the Joseon naval forces and the ordinary people who defended their homeland, opened in spectacular fashion on Sept. 11 around Uldolmok, the historic strait connecting Jindo and Haenam.
The festival honors the legendary Battle of Myeongnyang, in which Admiral Yi and his fleet defeated 133 Japanese vessels with only 13 Joseon ships.
Co-hosted by the Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City, Jindo County and Haenam County and organized by the Jeollanam-do Tourism Foundation, the three-day festival runs through Sept. 13 at the historic site of the battle.
The program features a reenactment of the naval battle, a grand departure parade, a maritime parade of Navy and Coast Guard vessels, a drone light show, fireworks, traditional cultural performances and a wide range of hands-on activities.
The Battle of Myeongnyang took place in 1597 during the Japanese invasions of Korea. Despite being overwhelmingly outnumbered, Admiral Yi Sun-sin led the Joseon fleet to a historic victory in what is regarded as one of the most remarkable naval battles in history.
The battle is remembered not only for the leadership of Admiral Yi and the courage of the Joseon sailors, but also for the contributions of ordinary people around Uldolmok who joined forces to overcome a national crisis. Their collective resistance remains a powerful symbol of patriotism and community spirit.
From the opening day, Uldolmok reverberated with the sounds of a grand departure.
Around 1,200 residents of Jindo and Haenam, along with tourists, marched across Jindo Bridge in a large-scale departure parade, officially launching the three-day festival.
At the opening ceremony, a symbolic performance marking the departure of the Panokseon, the Joseon Navy’s main warship, was followed by the festival’s signature production, the “Immersive Convergence Myeongnyang Naval Battle.”
The performance unfolded against Uldolmok itself—the very waters where the historic battle took place.
A main stage designed in the shape of a Panokseon’s bow, combined with special stage effects and dynamic combat action, vividly recreated the fierce battle that unfolded at Uldolmok 429 years ago.
By transforming a complex historical narrative into an accessible combination of performance, action and immersive effects, the production allowed families with children to experience and understand the significance of the Battle of Myeongnyang in an engaging way.
The “Immersive Convergence Myeongnyang Naval Battle” will be performed once again on the evening of Sept. 12 at the main stage in Jindo.
As darkness fell, the spectacle shifted from the waters of Uldolmok to the night sky.
A dazzling drone light show illuminated the strait, followed by a celebratory concert by singer Kim Jang-hoon and a spectacular maritime vortex fireworks show, bringing the opening night to a dramatic climax.
An even wider range of attractions awaits visitors over the weekend on Sept. 12 and 13.
A maritime parade featuring Navy and Coast Guard vessels will take place every day throughout the festival, offering visitors another striking spectacle on the historic waters.
On Sept. 12, programs will include another performance of the “Immersive Convergence Myeongnyang Naval Battle,” a talk-and-show program with historian Sim Yong-hwan, a youth K-POP dance competition and a cultural exchange performance by an arts troupe from Jiangsu Province, China.
Later in the evening, singers Song Ga-in and Enoch will take the stage for the “Myeongnyang Trot Festival,” bringing another wave of excitement to Uldolmok.
On Sept. 13, the final day of the festival, programs will include the “Ppangppare Karaoke” event hosted by Son Heon-su, another “Myeongnyang Trot Festival” featuring Jeon Yu-jin and Hyun Jin-woo, and a peace procession, bringing the three-day celebration to a close.
Traditional performances highlighting the distinctive culture and spirit of Korea’s southern region will also take place throughout the festival grounds.
Visitors can enjoy a royal guard changing ceremony, Ganggangsullae traditional circle dancing, Sopo Geolgut Nongak folk percussion, and the “Drums of Victory” parade.
Hands-on programs for visitors of all ages include Chungmugong archery, an Admiral Yi Sun-sin meal experience, opportunities to wear a general’s uniform, Joseon naval forces experiences and themed photo zones.
The significance of this year’s Myeongnyang Great Battle Festival extends beyond simply reenacting a victory from 429 years ago.
It seeks to bring into the present the spirit of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, the Joseon naval forces and ordinary citizens who refused to surrender even when faced with overwhelming odds.
13 ships against 133.
By the numbers alone, victory seemed nearly impossible.
Yet Admiral Yi understood and harnessed the powerful currents of Uldolmok, while the Joseon sailors and ordinary people stood their ground until the very end.
What appeared impossible became one of the most celebrated victories in Korean history.
Min Hyung-bae, Mayor of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City, said, “The Battle of Myeongnyang is a proud chapter in our history in which Admiral Yi Sun-sin, the Joseon naval forces and ordinary citizens turned the impossible into possible.”
He added, “The victorious spirit of Myeongnyang lives on today as we write a new history of achievement and advancement through the integration of Jeonnam and Gwangju and efforts to attract investment in the semiconductor industry. We will move forward vigorously toward an even greater future.”
Uldolmok was the place where cries of determination echoed across the sea 429 years ago as the fate of a nation hung in the balance.
In the autumn of 2026, those historic waters are once again telling South Korea the story of “a victory that turned the impossible into possible.”
