전남광주 장흥군의 한 방파제에서 야간 낚시를 하던 낚시객이 바다에 빠졌으나 인근 낚시객의 신속한 구조로 무사히 목숨을 건졌다.

특히 사고가 발생한 시간이 밤 11시에 가까운 늦은 시각이었던 만큼 자칫 발견과 구조가 늦어졌다면 큰 인명사고로 이어질 수 있었던 상황이었다.

완도해양경찰서(서장 김태환)에 따르면 지난 8일 오후 10시 55분께 장흥군 회진면 우산항 방파제에서 낚시객 A씨가 해상으로 추락했다.

A씨는 당시 방파제에서 낚시를 하던 중 장소를 옮기다가 낚시 줄에 발이 걸리면서 중심을 잃고 바다로 떨어진 것으로 파악됐다.

사고를 목격한 인근 낚시객 B씨는 즉시 구조에 나섰다. 야간 방파제라는 위험한 상황에도 B씨가 신속하게 대응하면서 A씨는 무사히 구조될 수 있었다.

신고를 받고 현장에 출동한 완도해경은 구조된 A씨의 건강 상태를 확인했으며, 다행히 별다른 이상은 없는 것으로 파악했다.

완도해경은 늦은 밤 위험을 무릅쓰고 다른 낚시객의 생명을 구하기 위해 신속하게 구조에 나선 B씨의 용기와 선행에 감사의 뜻을 전하고 감사장을 수여할 계획이다.

이번 사고는 방파제와 갯바위 낚시에서 구명조끼 착용과 안전수칙 준수가 얼마나 중요한지를 다시 한 번 보여준다.

방파제와 갯바위는 바닷물과 이끼 등으로 표면이 미끄러운 곳이 많고, 낚싯줄이나 낚시도구에 발이 걸리면서 순간적으로 균형을 잃을 위험도 있다. 특히 야간에는 시야까지 크게 제한돼 작은 부주의가 해상 추락으로 이어질 가능성이 더욱 커진다.

혼자 낚시를 할 경우 사고 사실을 즉시 알리기 어려워 구조가 늦어질 수 있다는 점도 각별히 주의해야 한다.

이태현 완도해경 해양안전과장은 “방파제와 갯바위는 표면이 미끄러워 작은 부주의도 추락사고로 이어질 수 있어 반드시 구명조끼를 착용해 달라”고 당부했다.

해경은 방파제와 갯바위에서 낚시할 때 구명조끼를 반드시 착용하고, 야간에는 이동할 때 주변 장애물과 낚싯줄 등을 충분히 확인하는 등 안전수칙을 철저히 지켜야 한다고 강조했다.

■ “낚시의 즐거움보다 생명이 먼저다.”
이번 사고에서는 주변 낚시객의 신속한 구조로 큰 피해를 막았지만, 바다에 추락한 뒤에는 파도와 수온, 암벽 등 여러 위험요인 때문에 짧은 시간에도 상황이 급격히 악화될 수 있다. 방파제와 갯바위를 찾는 낚시객 스스로 구명조끼 착용을 선택이 아닌 기본 안전수칙으로 인식해야 한다.

An angler who fell into the sea while fishing at night from a breakwater in Jangheung, Jeonnam-Gwangju, was safely rescued thanks to the swift action of another angler nearby.
The accident occurred shortly before 11 p.m., when visibility was extremely limited. Had the victim not been spotted and rescued quickly, the incident could have resulted in a serious loss of life.
According to the Wando Coast Guard, headed by Chief Kim Tae-hwan, the accident occurred at approximately 10:55 p.m. on September 8 at the breakwater of Usan Port in Hoejin-myeon, Jangheung County.
The victim, identified only as Angler A, was fishing on the breakwater when he attempted to move to another fishing spot. He reportedly tripped over a fishing line, lost his balance, and fell into the sea.
Another angler nearby, identified as B, witnessed the accident and immediately went to his rescue. Despite the dangers of attempting a rescue from a breakwater at night, B responded quickly and successfully helped bring A to safety.
The Wando Coast Guard responded to the scene and checked A’s physical condition. Authorities confirmed that he had suffered no apparent health problems.
The Coast Guard expressed its gratitude to B for his courage and selfless action in rescuing another person despite the dangers involved. It plans to present him with a certificate of appreciation.
The incident once again highlights the importance of wearing life jackets and strictly following safety precautions when fishing from breakwaters and rocky shores.
Surfaces on breakwaters and rocky coastal areas can become extremely slippery due to seawater, algae, and other conditions. Anglers can also easily lose their balance after tripping over fishing lines or equipment. At night, poor visibility further increases the risk that even a momentary lapse in attention could result in a fall into the sea.
Fishing alone can pose an additional danger because there may be no one nearby to immediately report an accident or provide assistance, potentially delaying rescue efforts.
Lee Tae-hyun, head of the Maritime Safety Division at the Wando Coast Guard, said, “Breakwaters and rocky shores can be slippery, and even a small moment of carelessness can lead to a fall into the sea. We strongly urge anglers to always wear a life jacket.”
The Coast Guard emphasized that anglers should wear life jackets at all times when fishing from breakwaters or rocky shores. It also advised people fishing at night to carefully check for obstacles, fishing lines, and other hazards when moving around and to strictly observe basic safety precautions.

In this case, the swift response of a nearby angler prevented the accident from becoming a tragedy. However, once a person falls into the sea, waves, low water temperatures, rocks, and other hazards can cause conditions to deteriorate rapidly.
Anglers visiting breakwaters and rocky shores should therefore recognize that wearing a life jacket is not an option, but an essential safety requirement that can save their lives.
