전남광주통합특별시 완도군 모황도 인근 해상에서 운항 중이던 어획물운반선의 기관장이 기관실에서 갑자기 쓰러져 해경에 의해 긴급 구조됐다.

완도해양경찰서에 따르면 8월 6일 오후 3시 15분께 완도군 모황도 남동방 약 2.9㎞ 해상에 있던 202톤급 어획물운반선 A호에서 응급환자가 발생했다는 신고가 접수됐다.

신고를 받은 완도해경은 구조대와 경비함정을 현장으로 급파했다. 현장에 도착한 구조대는 선박 기관실 안에 쓰러져 있던 기관장 B씨를 구조해 응급처치를 실시했다.

해경은 B씨를 완도해경 전용부두로 신속하게 이송한 뒤 대기하고 있던 119구급대에 인계했다. B씨는 인근 병원으로 긴급 이송돼 치료를 받았다.

해경은 신고 당시 “기관실에서 가스 냄새가 났으며, 기관실 안에 있던 기관장이 쓰러졌다”는 선원들의 진술을 확보한 것으로 전해졌다.

완도해경은 선박 관계자들을 상대로 기관실 내부에서 가스가 발생했는지와 환기시설이 정상적으로 작동했는지 등을 확인하는 등 정확한 사고 경위를 조사할 방침이다.

선박 기관실은 연료와 윤활유, 배기가스 등이 집중되고 환기가 원활하지 않을 경우 유해가스가 축적될 가능성이 있는 밀폐공간이다. 비슷한 사고를 막기 위해서는 작업 전 충분한 환기와 가스농도 측정, 감지장비 설치, 보호구 착용 등 안전관리를 강화해야 한다.

완도해경 관계자는 “신고를 접수한 즉시 구조세력을 투입해 환자를 안전하게 이송했다”며 “선원 진술과 선박 내부 상태 등을 토대로 사고 원인을 면밀하게 조사하겠다.”고 밝혔다.

The engine chief of a fishing carrier operating in waters near Mohwangdo Island in Wando County, Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City, was urgently rescued by the Coast Guard after collapsing inside the vessel’s engine room.
According to the Wando Coast Guard Station, a report was received at approximately 3:15 p.m. on August 6 that a medical emergency had occurred aboard the 202-ton fishing carrier A, located about 2.9 kilometers southeast of Mohwangdo Island.
Upon receiving the report, the Wando Coast Guard immediately dispatched a rescue team and patrol vessel to the scene. The rescue team found engine chief B collapsed inside the engine room, removed him from the area and administered emergency treatment.
The Coast Guard transported B to its dedicated pier in Wando, where he was handed over to a waiting 119 emergency medical team. He was then rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The Coast Guard reportedly obtained statements from crew members who said they had smelled gas in the engine room before the engine chief was found collapsed inside.
The Wando Coast Guard plans to investigate the exact circumstances of the incident by questioning those aboard the vessel and determining whether gas had accumulated inside the engine room and whether its ventilation systems were operating properly.
A vessel’s engine room is an enclosed space where fuel, lubricants and exhaust gases are concentrated. If ventilation is inadequate, hazardous gases may accumulate. To prevent similar accidents, safety measures should be strengthened, including sufficient ventilation before entering or working in the space, gas-level monitoring, the installation of detection equipment and the use of appropriate protective gear.
“We immediately deployed rescue units after receiving the report and safely transported the patient,” a Wando Coast Guard official said. “We will thoroughly investigate the cause of the incident based on crew statements and conditions inside the vessel.”
