해남군이 고산 윤선도 유적지 인근에 자리한 ‘백련재 문학의 집’에서 2026년 하반기 입주작가 7명을 공개 모집한다.
접수 기간은 오는 8월 1일부터 14일까지다. 모집 분야는 시와 시조, 소설, 수필, 희곡·시나리오, 아동·청소년문학, 번역, 평론 등 문학 전 분야다. 신춘문예나 문학 전문지를 통해 등단한 기성작가는 물론, 공고에서 정한 자격과 추천서를 갖춘 예비작가도 지원할 수 있다.
이번 하반기 입주 과정은 작가의 집필 목적과 창작계획에 따라 입주 기간을 선택할 수 있도록 6개월 과정의 ‘집중지원’과 3개월 과정의 ‘일반지원’으로 나눠 운영한다. 장편소설이나 연구·번역 등 장기 집필이 필요한 작가는 집중지원 과정을, 비교적 짧은 기간 안에 작품을 완성하려는 작가는 일반지원 과정을 선택할 수 있다.
선정된 작가에게는 개별 화장실을 갖춘 1인 1실 집필 공간이 무료로 제공된다. 무선인터넷과 공동주방, 다목적실, 북카페 등 공용시설도 이용할 수 있다. 전통정원과 고산 윤선도 유적지 산책길 등 자연과 역사가 어우러진 주변 환경도 창작에 집중할 수 있는 백련재만의 장점으로 꼽힌다.
입주를 희망하는 작가는 신청서와 관련 서류를 담당자 전자우편(lee181020@korea.kr)으로 제출하면 된다. 구체적인 신청 자격과 제출서류, 입주 조건은 해남군청과 백련재 문학의 집 누리집에 게시된 공고문을 확인해야 한다.
백련재 문학의 집은 해남군이 직접 운영하는 한옥형 문학 레지던시 시설이다. 2019년부터 전국 문인들에게 집필 공간을 제공하며 창작활동을 지원해 왔다. 다목적 공간을 포함해 모두 8실을 갖추고 있으며, 입주작가들이 해남의 자연과 문화유산 속에서 안정적으로 작품을 집필할 수 있도록 조성됐다.
그동안 황지우·최두석 시인을 비롯해 송기원·정택진·김영래·윤순례·서성란·이현수·안지숙 소설가, 이경철 시인 등 다양한 분야의 문인들이 백련재에 머물며 작품활동을 이어왔다. 초기 입주작가로는 박병두, 이은유, 이지담, 채길순, 이정모, 이원화 작가 등도 확인된다.
해남군은 입주작가들의 작품과 활동 내용을 담은 소식지를 발간하고, 작가의 집필 의도와 작품세계, 해남의 풍광을 소개하는 영상 콘텐츠도 제작해 왔다. 입주작가 북콘서트와 주민 만남 행사 등을 통해 작가의 창작 성과를 지역사회와 공유하는 프로그램도 운영했다.
최근에는 입주작가들의 작품 출간 성과도 이어지고 있다. 2024년 입주작가 강준 소설가는 《말은 욕망하지 않는다》를 출간했으며, 2025년 입주작가인 이월춘 시인은 《바람 냄새 나는 사람》, 홍경희 시인은 《울었던 자리마다 돌을 쌓으며》, 박상봉 시인은 《불 꺼진 너의 단어 곁에서》를 펴냈다. 2021년 입주작가 전미홍 소설가의 《지극함을 위하여》 등도 백련재의 주요 창작 성과로 소개되고 있다.
공개된 연도별 모집자료를 살펴보면 2024년에는 상반기와 하반기에 각각 13명씩 모두 26명을 모집했다. 2025년에는 상반기 9명과 하반기 13명 등 22명을 모집했고, 2026년에는 상반기 9명에 이어 이번 하반기에 7명을 모집한다. 이에 따라 최근 3년간 공고에 제시된 모집 예정 인원은 모두 64명이다.
그러나 이 숫자는 각 모집공고에 제시된 선발 예정 인원을 합산한 것으로, 실제로 입주를 완료한 작가의 누적 인원과는 구분해야 한다. 선정 뒤 입주를 포기하거나 중도 퇴실한 사례, 같은 작가의 재입주 여부 등에 따라 실제 통계가 달라질 수 있기 때문이다.
현재 공개된 자료만으로는 2019년 사업 시작 이후 모두 몇 명이 백련재에 입주했는지 정확히 확인하기 어렵다. 연도별 신청자 수와 경쟁률, 최종 선정자 수, 실제 입주 완료자 수, 기성작가와 예비작가 비율, 분야별·지역별 현황 등도 종합적으로 공개되지 않았다.
백련재 문학의 집이 전국적인 문학 창작 거점으로 성장하고 있는 만큼 이제는 유명 입주작가의 이름과 개별 출간 사례를 소개하는 수준을 넘어 누적 운영성과를 구체적인 통계로 공개할 필요가 있다. 시설 운영비와 프로그램 예산, 연도별 가동률, 입주작가의 작품 완성·출간·수상 실적, 북콘서트와 강연 등 지역사회 환원 성과도 함께 제시돼야 한다.
해남군 관계자는 백련재 문학의 집이 문인들에게 안정적인 집필 공간을 제공하고 지역사회에는 문학적 활력을 불어넣는 창작 거점이라며 전국의 역량 있는 작가들의 관심과 참여를 당부했다.
백련재가 단순히 작가들이 일정 기간 머물다 가는 집필시설을 넘어 해남의 문학 자산을 축적하는 공간으로 자리매김하려면 입주작가 모집과 함께 2019년 이후 실제 누적 입주 인원과 창작성과를 주민들에게 투명하게 공개하는 작업도 뒤따라야 한다.

Haenam County is recruiting seven writers for the second half of 2026 to join the Baengnyeonjae House of Literature, located near the historic site associated with the renowned Joseon-era scholar and poet Gosan Yun Seon-do.
Applications will be accepted from August 1 through August 14. The residency is open to all literary genres, including poetry, sijo, fiction, essays, plays and screenplays, children’s and young adult literature, translation, and literary criticism.
Established writers who made their literary debut through major literary contests or professional journals are eligible to apply. Aspiring writers may also apply if they meet the qualifications specified in the official announcement and submit the required letter of recommendation.
The residency program for the second half of the year will be divided into a six-month “Intensive Support” program and a three-month “General Support” program, allowing writers to select a period suited to their writing goals and creative plans.
Writers working on long-form projects such as novels, academic research, or literary translations may choose the Intensive Support program, while those aiming to complete a project within a shorter period may apply for the General Support program.
Each selected writer will receive a private writing room with an individual bathroom at no cost. Residents will also have access to wireless internet, a shared kitchen, a multipurpose room, a book café, and other communal facilities.
The traditional garden, walking trails around the Gosan Yun Seon-do historic site, and the surrounding natural and cultural environment are regarded as distinctive advantages of Baengnyeonjae, providing writers with a peaceful setting in which to focus on their work.
Applicants must submit an application form and supporting documents by email to the program coordinator at lee181020@korea.kr. Detailed eligibility requirements, required documents, and residency conditions are available in the official notices posted on the Haenam County Government and Baengnyeonjae House of Literature websites.
Baengnyeonjae is a traditional Korean-style literary residency operated directly by Haenam County. Since 2019, it has provided writers from across the country with dedicated spaces for writing and creative work.
The facility has eight rooms, including a multipurpose space, and was established to help resident writers work in a stable environment surrounded by Haenam’s natural scenery and cultural heritage.
A wide range of literary figures have stayed at Baengnyeonjae, including poets Hwang Ji-woo and Choi Doo-seok; novelists Song Ki-won, Jeong Taek-jin, Kim Young-rae, Yun Sun-rye, Seo Seong-ran, Lee Hyun-soo, and Ahn Ji-sook; and poet Lee Kyung-cheol.
Writers identified among the residency’s early participants include Park Byeong-doo, Lee Eun-yu, Lee Ji-dam, Chae Gil-sun, Lee Jeong-mo, and Lee Won-hwa.
Haenam County has published newsletters featuring the works and activities of resident writers. It has also produced video content introducing the writers’ creative intentions, literary worlds, and the landscape of Haenam.
Programs such as book concerts and meetings with local residents have also been organized to share the writers’ creative achievements with the community.
Resident writers have recently continued to publish new works. Novelist Kang Jun, a 2024 resident, published Words Do Not Desire. Among the 2025 residents, poet Lee Wol-chun published A Person Who Smells of the Wind, poet Hong Gyeong-hee published Stacking Stones Wherever I Cried, and poet Park Sang-bong published Beside Your Words After the Light Went Out.
Novelist Jeon Mi-hong’s For the Sake of Devotion, written by a 2021 resident, has also been presented as one of Baengnyeonjae’s notable creative achievements.
According to publicly available annual recruitment notices, Baengnyeonjae sought 13 writers in each half of 2024, for a total of 26. In 2025, it recruited nine writers in the first half and 13 in the second half, totaling 22. In 2026, nine places were announced for the first half, followed by seven for the second half.
The total number of places listed in recruitment notices over the past three years therefore amounts to 64.
However, this figure represents the combined number of planned selections stated in the notices and should not be treated as the actual number of writers who completed their residencies. The final statistics may differ because some selected applicants may have withdrawn, left the program early, or participated more than once.
Based on currently disclosed information, it is difficult to determine exactly how many writers have stayed at Baengnyeonjae since the residency program began in 2019.
Comprehensive data have not been made publicly available on annual application numbers, competition rates, final selections, completed residencies, the proportion of established and aspiring writers, or the distribution of residents by literary genre and region.
As Baengnyeonjae develops into a nationally recognized literary creation hub, Haenam County should move beyond highlighting famous participants and individual publications and disclose detailed statistics on the residency’s cumulative performance.
The county should also publish information on facility operating costs, program budgets, annual occupancy rates, completed and published works, literary awards received by residents, and contributions to the local community through book concerts, lectures, and other public programs.
A Haenam County official described Baengnyeonjae as a creative hub that provides writers with a stable place to work while bringing literary vitality to the local community. The official encouraged talented writers from across the country to apply.
For Baengnyeonjae to become more than a temporary writing facility and firmly establish itself as a place that builds Haenam’s long-term literary assets, the recruitment process should be accompanied by transparent disclosure of the actual number of residents since 2019 and the creative achievements generated through the program.
