전라남도해양수산과학원이 어촌의 대표적인 ‘효자 수산물’로 꼽히는 주꾸미 자원 회복과 어업인 소득 증대를 위해 어린 주꾸미 40만 마리를 방류한다.

전남도해양수산과학원은 오는 25일까지 8일간 신안·함평·무안·진도 연안 해역에 자체 생산한 어린 주꾸미 40만 마리를 방류한다고 밝혔다.

이번에 방류하는 어린 주꾸미는 지역 해역에서 확보한 건강한 우량 어미로부터 자원조성연구소 인공 산란장에서 약 한 달간 부화와 성장 과정을 거쳐 생산됐다. 방류 행사에는 지자체와 수협, 지역 어업인들이 함께 참여해 풍요로운 바다 조성에 힘을 보탠다.

주꾸미는 방류 후 약 1년이면 몸길이 12cm 안팎의 성체로 성장하는 어종이다. 특히 서해와 남해의 얕은 연안에 정착해 생활하는 특성이 있어 방류 효과가 다른 지역으로 분산되지 않고 해당 지역 어업인들의 소득 향상으로 이어질 것으로 기대된다.

현재 주꾸미는 1kg(약 13마리)당 5만~6만 원에 거래되는 고소득 수산물이다. 2025년 기준 전국 주꾸미 생산량은 3천702톤이며, 이 가운데 전남 생산량은 456톤으로 약 12%를 차지해 지역 연근해 어업의 주요 소득원 역할을 하고 있다.

전남도해양수산과학원은 주꾸미의 경제적·생태적 가치를 고려해 지난 2014년부터 지속적으로 종자 방류 사업을 추진해 왔다.
지금까지 12년간 총 349만 마리의 어린 주꾸미를 방류하며 수산자원 회복과 해양생태계 보전에 힘써왔다.

김충남 전남도해양수산과학원장은 “주꾸미는 이동 범위가 좁고 성장 속도가 빨라 방류 효과를 비교적 빠르게 체감할 수 있는 지역 특화 품종”이라며 “앞으로도 현장 어업인들의 의견을 적극 반영해 방류 품종과 규모를 확대하고 실질적인 소득 증대에 도움이 되도록 노력하겠다.”고 말했다.

Expected to Boost Fishermen’s Income… 3.49 Million Released Over the Past 12 Years
The Jeollanam-do Marine Fisheries Science Institute is launching a large-scale release of juvenile webfoot octopuses to help restore marine resources and increase the income of local fishing communities.
The institute announced that it will release 400,000 juvenile webfoot octopuses into the coastal waters of Shinan, Hampyeong, Muan, and Jindo over an eight-day period ending on June 25.
The juveniles were produced at the Resource Enhancement Research Center through an artificial breeding program using healthy broodstock collected from local waters. Local governments, fisheries cooperatives, and fishermen are participating in the release effort as part of a joint initiative to create a more abundant marine ecosystem.
Webfoot octopuses grow rapidly and can reach approximately 12 centimeters in length within a year after release. As a relatively sedentary species inhabiting shallow coastal waters of the Yellow Sea and South Sea, the benefits of stock enhancement are expected to remain within local fishing grounds, directly contributing to fishermen’s income.
Currently, webfoot octopus is considered a high-value seafood species, selling for approximately 50,000 to 60,000 won per kilogram (about 13 individuals). In 2025, Jeollanam-do produced 456 tons of the nation’s total webfoot octopus catch of 3,702 tons, accounting for about 12 percent of national production and serving as a major source of income for coastal fisheries.
Recognizing the species’ ecological and economic importance, the Jeollanam-do Marine Fisheries Science Institute has continuously conducted stock enhancement projects since 2014. Over the past 12 years, a total of 3.49 million juvenile webfoot octopuses have been released to help restore marine resources and strengthen coastal ecosystems.
Kim Chung-nam, Director of the Jeollanam-do Marine Fisheries Science Institute, said, “The webfoot octopus is a regionally important species that grows quickly and does not migrate far, allowing fishermen to experience the benefits of stock enhancement in a relatively short period of time. We will continue to expand both the species and scale of our release programs while actively reflecting the voices of local fishermen to provide meaningful support for their livelihoods.”
