기후에너지환경부 영산강유역환경청(청장 김영민)이 국내에서 유일하게 생태계 교란 식물인 갯줄풀이 서식하고 있는 전남 진도군 일대에서 대대적인 제거 작업에 나섰다.

영산강유역환경청은 지난 28일 진도군 임회면 남동리 일원에서 진도군, 다도해해상국립공원, 국립생태원 등 관계기관과 지역주민 100여 명이 참여한 가운데 생태계 교란 생물인 갯줄풀 제거 행사를 실시했다고 밝혔다.

갯줄풀은 벼과에 속하는 다년생 식물로 번식력이 매우 강해 토종 식물의 생육을 방해하고 갯벌 생태계를 교란하는 대표적인 외래종이다. 정부는 생태계 위해성을 고려해 지난 2016년 갯줄풀을 생태계 교란 생물로 지정해 관리하고 있다.

현재 진도군 남동리 일대에는 약 6만㎡ 규모의 갯줄풀 군락지가 형성돼 있으며, 이번 1단계 작업을 통해 전체 면적 가운데 약 2만㎡를 우선 제거했다. 영산강유역환경청은 남은 4만㎡에 대해서도 연내 추가 제거 작업을 실시해 완전 퇴치를 추진할 계획이다.

특히 이번 제거 작업은 단순 예초 방식이 아닌 뿌리까지 완전히 뽑아내는 정밀 제거 방식을 적용해 효과를 높였다. 또한 제거가 완료된 구역에는 제초 매트를 설치해 갯줄풀의 재발생을 원천적으로 차단하는 등 사후 관리에도 만전을 기하고 있다.

참여 기관들은 이번 합동 작업을 계기로 생태계 교란 생물에 대한 공동 대응 체계를 더욱 강화하고, 생물다양성 보전과 건강한 연안 생태계 복원을 위한 협력을 지속해 나가기로 했다.

김영민 영산강유역환경청장은 “생물다양성 보호와 생태계 건강성 회복을 위해 생태계 교란 생물 제거·퇴치 사업을 지속적으로 추진하겠다.”며 “갯줄풀은 번식력이 매우 강해 완전 퇴치까지 꾸준한 관리와 노력이 필요한 만큼 지역사회와 주민들의 지속적인 관심과 적극적인 참여를 부탁드린다.”고 말했다.

한편 영산강유역환경청은 앞으로도 생태계 교란 생물에 대한 상시 모니터링과 제거 사업을 확대해 지역 생태계 보전과 자연환경 회복에 적극 나설 방침이다.

The Yeongsan River Basin Environmental Office, headed by Commissioner Kim Young-min, has launched a large-scale campaign to eradicate Spartina grass, an invasive alien plant species found exclusively in Jindo County, Jeollanam-do.
According to the Environmental Office, a joint removal event was held on May 28 in Namdong-ri, Imhoe-myeon, Jindo County, with the participation of more than 100 people, including officials from Jindo County, the Dadohaehaesang National Park, the National Institute of Ecology, local residents, and related organizations.
Spartina grass is a perennial species belonging to the grass family (Poaceae) and is known for its aggressive reproductive capacity. It disrupts the growth of native vegetation and alters tidal-flat ecosystems, making it one of Korea’s most problematic invasive plant species. Recognizing its ecological threat, the government designated Spartina grass as an “Ecosystem Disturbing Species” in 2016.
Currently, approximately 60,000 square meters of Spartina grass colonies are distributed throughout the Namdong-ri area. During this first phase of eradication, about 20,000 square meters were successfully removed. The Yeongsan River Basin Environmental Office plans to eliminate the remaining 40,000 square meters within this year, aiming for complete eradication.
Unlike conventional mowing methods, the operation employed a precision removal technique that extracts the plants entirely, including their root systems, to maximize effectiveness. In addition, weed-control mats have been installed across the treated areas to prevent regrowth and ensure long-term management success.
Participating organizations agreed to further strengthen their cooperative response system against invasive species and continue joint efforts to conserve biodiversity and restore healthy coastal ecosystems.
Commissioner Kim Young-min stated, “We will continue to promote projects aimed at removing and controlling ecosystem-disturbing species in order to protect biodiversity and restore ecological health.”
He added, “Because Spartina grass spreads rapidly and requires continuous management for complete eradication, we ask local communities and residents to maintain their interest and actively participate in these conservation efforts.”
Meanwhile, the Yeongsan River Basin Environmental Office plans to expand monitoring and eradication programs for invasive species and remain committed to preserving regional ecosystems and restoring natural environments.
