서영수 해남교도소 교정협의회장이 지난 11일 서울 중구 한국프레스센터에서 열린 ‘제44회 교정대상 시상식’에서 수용자 교정교화와 사회복귀 지원에 기여한 공로를 인정받아 봉사상을 수상했다.

서 회장은 2010년 해남교도소 개청 이후 현재까지 15년 넘게 교정협의회 활동에 참여하며, 불우 수용자 지원과 복지시설 사회봉사 활동, 혹서기 생수 지원 등 다양한 나눔 활동을 이어오고 있다.

특히 매월 경제적으로 어려운 수용자들을 위한 지원금을 전달하며 안정적인 수용생활을 돕는 한편, 수용자들의 건강한 사회복귀와 재범 방지를 위한 교정교화 활동에도 꾸준히 힘써왔다.

또한 지역사회 복지시설을 대상으로 한 사회봉사 활동과 교정행정 지원 활동에도 적극 참여하며 민·관 협력 기반의 따뜻한 교정문화 조성에 기여해 왔다는 평가를 받고 있다.

서영수 회장은 수상 소감을 통해 “당연히 해야 할 일을 했을 뿐인데 과분한 상을 받게 돼 감사하다”며 “이번 수상은 저 개인만의 상이 아니라 해남교도소 직원들과 교정위원들이 함께 노력해 만든 모두의 상이라고 생각한다.”고 밝혔다.

이어 “앞으로도 교정협의회 회장이라는 자리가 부끄럽지 않도록 수용자들의 건전한 사회복귀와 지역사회 나눔 실천을 위해 최선을 다하겠다.”고 말했다.

한편 교정대상은 수용자 교정교화와 교정행정 발전에 기여한 교정공무원과 민간인을 대상으로 수여되는 상으로, 교정 분야 최고 권위의 상 가운데 하나로 평가받고 있다.

Seo Young-su, chairman of the Haenam Correctional Institution Council, received the Volunteer Service Award at the 44th Correction Awards ceremony held on the 11th at the Korea Press Center in Jung-gu, Seoul, in recognition of his contributions to inmate rehabilitation and support for successful reintegration into society.
Since the opening of Haenam Correctional Institution in 2010, Chairman Seo has participated in correctional council activities for more than 15 years, carrying out a wide range of charitable efforts including financial assistance for underprivileged inmates, volunteer work at welfare facilities, and the provision of bottled water during extreme summer heat.
In particular, he has consistently provided monthly financial support for economically disadvantaged inmates to help ensure stable living conditions within the correctional facility, while also dedicating himself to rehabilitation programs aimed at preventing repeat offenses and promoting healthy reintegration into society.
He has also been actively involved in volunteer activities for local welfare facilities and in supporting correctional administration, contributing to the creation of a warm and cooperative correctional culture based on public-private partnership.
In his acceptance speech, Seo Young-su said, “I am deeply grateful to receive such an honorable award for simply doing what I believed should be done. This award does not belong to me alone, but to all the staff members and correctional committee members of Haenam Correctional Institution who worked together.”
He added, “I will continue to do my utmost to support inmates’ successful return to society and to practice community sharing so that I may live up to the responsibility of serving as chairman of the correctional council.”
Meanwhile, the Correction Awards are presented to correctional officers and civilians who have contributed to inmate rehabilitation and the advancement of correctional administration, and are regarded as one of the most prestigious honors in the field of corrections.
