해남교도소(소장 김남진)가 ‘교정은 현장에서 완성된다’는 원칙 아래 지역사회와의 상생을 실천하는 봉사활동을 전개했다.

해남교도소 보라미봉사단은 3월 31일 해남군 관내 사회복지시설 ‘해남 임마누엘 공동체’를 방문해 환경정비 봉사활동을 실시했다고 밝혔다.

이날 봉사에는 모범 수형자와 교정위원, 교도소 직원 등 총 18명이 참여해 시설 내 식당과 화장실 등 공동 사용 공간을 집중적으로 청소하고, 주변 환경 정비와 쓰레기 수거 활동을 펼쳤다.
평소 인력의 손길이 부족한 공간을 중심으로 진행된 이번 활동은 실질적인 도움을 제공했다는 점에서 의미를 더했다.

현장에서 봉사에 참여한 한 수형자는 “땀 흘려 누군가를 돕는 일이 이렇게 보람되고 행복한 것인지 처음 느꼈다.”며 “앞으로도 사회에 도움이 되는 삶을 살고 싶다.”고 소감을 전했다.

김남진 해남교도소장은 “지역사회와의 지속적인 소통과 참여를 통해 수용자들의 인식 변화를 이끌고 있다”며 “앞으로도 다양한 교화 프로그램을 확대해 수용자들이 건강한 사회 구성원으로 복귀할 수 있도록 적극 지원하겠다.”고 밝혔다.

한편, 해남교도소는 봉사활동, 직업훈련, 인성교육 등 다각적인 교정·교화 프로그램을 운영하며 ‘사회와 연결된 교정행정’ 실현에 힘쓰고 있다.

Haenam Correctional Institution (Warden: Kim Nam-jin) has carried out a volunteer initiative aimed at fostering coexistence with the local community under the principle that “correction is completed in the field.”
According to the institution, its Borami Volunteer Group visited the local welfare facility “Haenam Immanuel Community” on March 31 and conducted environmental cleanup activities.
A total of 18 participants—including model inmates, correctional committee members, and staff—took part in the effort. They focused on cleaning commonly used spaces such as the cafeteria and restrooms, as well as collecting litter and improving the surrounding environment. The activity was particularly meaningful as it addressed areas that often lack sufficient manpower, providing tangible assistance to the facility.
One inmate who participated in the volunteer work shared, “It was my first time realizing how rewarding and fulfilling it is to help others through hard work. I want to continue living a life that contributes to society.”
Warden Kim Nam-jin stated, “Through continuous communication and engagement with the local community, we are encouraging positive changes in inmates’ awareness,” adding, “We will further expand various rehabilitation programs to support inmates in successfully reintegrating as healthy members of society.”
Meanwhile, Haenam Correctional Institution continues to operate diverse correctional and rehabilitation programs—including volunteer service, vocational training, and character education—striving to realize a correctional system that remains connected to society.
