전라남도가 ‘정원의 시대’를 선언하며 정원 전문가 양성과 생활 속 정원문화 확산에 본격 나섰다.

전남도는 정원의 본고장이라는 명성을 강화하고 도민 누구나 일상에서 정원을 가꾸고 즐길 수 있도록 정원전문가 교육과 평생교육을 결합한 ‘정원 가드너 양성 프로젝트’를 추진한다고 밝혔다.

이번 사업은 전문 인력을 양성하는 ‘정원관리사 교육’과 생활형 교육인 ‘정원관리 평생교육’으로 나뉘어 진행된다.
정원관리사 양성교육은 총 247명 규모로 운영되며, 기초과정 70시간과 심화과정 70시간 등 총 140시간의 전문 교육으로 구성된다.
교육비는 1인당 85만 원이지만 교육생은 10만 원만 부담하면 된다.

또한 올해 처음 도입되는 정원관리 평생교육 과정은 도민 누구나 참여할 수 있는 생활형 교육으로 200명 규모로 운영된다.
교육은 계절별 정원 관리 요령, 화분 분갈이 등 실생활에 바로 활용 가능한 프로그램을 중심으로 32시간 과정으로 진행된다.
교육비 40만 원 가운데 자부담은 5만 원이다.
교육은 전남도 공모를 통해 선정된 대학과 수목원 등 전문기관에서 진행된다.

권역별 교육기관은
▲북부권 – 전남대·전남도립대·국립정원문화원
▲서부권 – 목포대·완도수목원
▲남부권 – 순천대·순천 정원도시센터·구례 지리산정원사업소
▲중부권 – 동신대 등에서 위탁 운영된다.

전남도는 지난 2019년부터 정원관리사 교육을 운영해 지금까지 총 1천576명이 교육을 수료했다.
이 가운데 30시간 이상 정원 봉사활동을 이수한 65명에게는 ‘전라남도 정원관리사’ 인증서가 발급됐다.

이들은 현재 공동체정원 가든 서포터즈, 국가정원, 지방정원, 수목원, 자연휴양림 등에서 정원 가드너로 활동하며 정원문화 확산의 중심 역할을 하고 있다.

전남도는 앞으로 전문 정원 가드너 국가자격증 신설과 관련 법·제도 정비도 정부에 건의하며, 지난해 개원한 국립정원문화원과 협업해 정원교육 프로그램도 확대할 계획이다.

문미란 전남도 산림휴양과장은 “정원 가드너 양성 교육을 통해 전문 인력을 키우고 새로운 일자리로 연결되도록 하겠다.”며 “정원관리 평생교육을 통해 도민 누구나 생활 속에서 정원을 가꾸고 누리는 문화를 확산시키겠다.”고 말했다.

한편 정원관리사 교육 신청은 소재지 관할 시군 산림부서에서 접수하며, 모집 일정과 교육 세부 사항도 시군 산림부서를 통해 확인할 수 있다.

“Gardens Are Jobs”: Jeonnam Launches Project to Train 447 Gardeners
Expanding Everyday Garden Culture and Nurturing Professionals for National Gardens, Arboretums, and Community Gardens

Jeollanam-do has begun a full-scale initiative to train gardening professionals and expand garden culture in everyday life, declaring the arrival of a new “era of gardens.”
The provincial government announced that it will implement a “Garden Gardener Training Project,” combining professional education and lifelong learning programs so that residents can easily enjoy and cultivate gardens in their daily lives while strengthening Jeonnam’s reputation as the home of garden culture.
The project consists of two main programs: the “Garden Manager Training Program” for professional workforce development and the “Garden Management Lifelong Education Program” designed for everyday participation by residents.
The Garden Manager Training Program will train 247 participants through a professional curriculum consisting of 70 hours of basic training and 70 hours of advanced training, totaling 140 hours.
Although the full tuition is 850,000 won per person, participants are required to pay only 100,000 won.
In addition, the Garden Management Lifelong Education Program, introduced for the first time this year, will be open to 200 residents who wish to learn practical gardening skills.
The 32-hour program focuses on practical knowledge such as seasonal garden care and repotting plants that can be directly applied in daily life.
Of the 400,000 won tuition fee, participants pay only 50,000 won.
The programs will be operated by universities and public arboretums selected through a provincial public contest.
The training institutions by region include:
Northern Region: Chonnam National University, Jeonnam Provincial College, National Garden Culture Center
Western Region: Mokpo National University, Wando Arboretum
Southern Region: Sunchon National University, Suncheon Garden City Center, Jirisan Garden Project Office in Gurye
Central Region: Dongshin University
Since launching the Garden Manager training program in 2019, Jeonnam has produced 1,576 graduates.
Among them, 65 individuals who completed more than 30 hours of volunteer service received the official “Jeollanam-do Garden Manager” certification.
These certified gardeners now play key roles in expanding garden culture by working as garden supporters in community gardens, national and local gardens, arboretums, and natural recreation forests.
The provincial government also plans to propose the establishment of a national certification system for professional gardeners and related legal frameworks to the central government.
It will also expand garden education programs in cooperation with the National Garden Culture Center, which opened last year.
Moon Mi-ran, Director of the Forest Recreation Division of Jeonnam Province, said,
“Through gardener training programs, we aim to cultivate professional experts and connect them to new job opportunities.”
She added, “With the newly introduced lifelong garden education program, we will expand opportunities for residents to enjoy and create gardens in their everyday surroundings.”
Applications for the Garden Manager Training Program can be submitted through the forest departments of local city and county governments, where detailed information on schedules and program content is also available.
