해양오염 체험·방제 실습으로 학생들 인식 전환… “깨끗한 바다, 선택 아닌 필수”
완도해양경찰서(서장 김길규)는 지난 19일 완도수산고등학교에서 재학생 100여 명을 대상으로 ‘바다사랑 해양환경 교실’을 운영하며 해양오염의 위험성과 환경보전의 중요성을 강조했다.
이번 교육은 해양환경공단과 협업해 마련된 것으로, 해양 관련 진로를 꿈꾸는 학생들에게 해양오염의 실태와 예방의 필요성을 직접 체감하게 하는 데 중점을 두고 진행됐다.
■ “해양오염은 한 번 발생하면 되돌릴 수 없다”
강의에서는 해양오염이 어떻게 발생하며, 그 피해가 어업·생태계·지역 경제에 어떤 치명적 결과를 초래하는지 실제 사례 중심으로 설명됐다.
특히 “바다는 한 번 오염되면 회복까지 수십 년이 걸린다.”는 전문가의 경고가 학생들에게 큰 울림을 주었다는 평가다.
■ 보호 복 착용·나노뜰채 방제 실습… “현장은 이렇게 움직인다.”
이론교육과 함께 방제 복 착용, 나노뜰채를 활용한 모의 방제 작업 등 현장 중심 체험 프로그램도 운영됐다.
학생들은 직접 오염 물질을 제거해보며 해양경찰이 수행하는 방제 활동의 어려움과 중요성을 몸소 느꼈다.
완도해경 해양오염방제과 직원들은 “해양오염은 예방이 최선의 대응”이라며, 현장에서 해양경찰이 어떻게 긴급 방제·사고 대응을 수행하는지 구체적인 사례를 통해 소개했다.
또한 퀴즈 및 참여 프로그램을 통해 학생들의 관심을 높이며 해양환경 보전 메시지를 전달했다.
■ “해양환경 보전은 미래 세대의 생존 문제”
완도해경 관계자는 “이번 교육이 미래의 해양 종사자들이 해양환경 보전의 책임을 깊이 인식하는 계기가 되었길 바란다.”며 “깨끗한 바다는 지역의 생명선이며, 이를 지키는 일은 선택이 아니라 필수”라고 강조했다.
또한 “앞으로도 해양오염 예방·대응 역량을 강화하고 교육·홍보 활동을 확대해 지속가능한 바다 만들기에 최선을 다하겠다.”고 밝혔다.

Wando Coast Guard instills ‘marine environmental awareness’ at Wando Fisheries High School
Hands-on oil-spill response training shifts students’ perception… “A clean ocean is not a choice, but a necessity”
The Wando Coast Guard (Chief Kim Gil-gyu) announced that on the 19th, it visited Wando Fisheries High School and conducted the “Love the Sea – Marine Environment Classroom” for more than 100 students, emphasizing the dangers of marine pollution and the importance of environmental conservation.
This program, held in cooperation with the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation, was designed to help students aspiring to marine-related careers experience first-hand the reality of marine pollution and the need for prevention.
■ “Marine pollution, once it occurs, cannot be undone”
The lecture explained how marine pollution occurs and highlighted real cases showing how such pollution inflicts serious damage on fisheries, ecosystems, and local economies.
Experts stressed that “once the ocean is polluted, recovery can take decades,” a warning that reportedly left a strong impression on the participating students.
■ Protective gear training & nano nets… “This is how the field really works”
Alongside theoretical instruction, the program included hands-on activities such as wearing protective equipment and conducting mock cleanup operations using nano nets.
Students experienced the process of removing pollutants themselves, gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges and importance of the Coast Guard’s oil-spill response duties.
Staff from the Wando Coast Guard’s Marine Pollution Response Division emphasized that “prevention is the best response to marine pollution” and presented real examples of how the Coast Guard conducts emergency response and cleanup operations in the field.
A quiz event and interactive activities were also offered to raise student engagement and reinforce marine conservation messages.
■ “Protecting the marine environment is a matter of survival for future generations”
A Wando Coast Guard official stated,
“We hope this program encouraged future maritime professionals to recognize their responsibility in protecting the marine environment.”
The official further stressed,
“A clean ocean is the lifeline of our region—and safeguarding it is not optional, but essential.”
They added that the Coast Guard will continue strengthening pollution prevention and response capabilities while expanding education and outreach efforts to ensure a sustainable and safe marine environment.
