진도소방서는 지난 10월 1일 전남 진도군 의신면 한 단독주택 화재 현장에서 주민이 개인 소유 소화기 4대를 활용해 초기 진화에 성공했다고 밝혔다.
당일 오후 11시 46분경 화재 신고를 받고 출동한 소방대는 원인 미상의 화재가 발생한 주택을 확인했다.
불은 주택 전소로 이어졌으나, 다행히 1명이 발바닥 2도 화상을 입는 데 그쳤다.
현장 인근에 있던 주민 임OO(남, 75) 씨는 소유한 소화기 4대를 신속히 사용해 불길 확산을 지연시키고, 인접 건물로의 연소 위험을 줄였다.
이로 인해 소방대의 화재 진압도 원활히 진행될 수 있었다.
진도소방서는 이번 사례를 통해 주택 등 생활공간에서 소화기 비치와 사용법 숙지의 중요성을 다시 한 번 강조했다.
김재출 진도소방서장은 “개인 소화기의 적극적인 활용이 화재 피해 저감에 결정적인 도움이 됐다”며, “앞으로도 시민들의 화재 예방과 초기 대응 능력 강화를 위해 노력하겠다.”고 밝혔다.

Resident Uses Four Fire Extinguishers to Contain House Fire in Early Stage
The Jindo Fire Department announced that on October 1, a resident successfully contained a fire in a single-family home in Uisin-myeon, Jindo-gun, Jeollanam-do, using four personal fire extinguishers.
At 11:46 p.m., the fire department responded to a report of a fire at the house, whose cause is currently unknown.
The fire completely engulfed the house, but fortunately, only one person sustained second-degree burns on the soles of their feet.
A nearby resident, Mr. Im (male, 75), quickly used his four fire extinguishers to delay the spread of flames, reducing the risk of the fire reaching adjacent buildings. This timely action also helped the fire department extinguish the fire more efficiently.
The Jindo Fire Department emphasized the importance of having fire extinguishers in residential spaces and knowing how to use them properly.
Chief Kim Jae-chul of the Jindo Fire Department said, “The active use of personal fire extinguishers played a decisive role in minimizing fire damage. We will continue to work on strengthening citizens’ fire prevention awareness and early response capabilities.”
