최근 휴대전화, 전동킥보드, 보조배터리 등 일상 곳곳에서 사용하는 리튬이온배터리 관련 화재 사고가 잇따라 발생함이 바로 그 예이다.

리튬이온배터리는 에너지 밀도가 높아 충전과 방전 효율이 뛰어나지만, 충격이나 고온·과충전 상황에서는 내부 단락(합선)이 일어나 급격히 발열하고, 순식간에 폭발하기 때문에 주의를 기울여야 한다.

실제로 최근 발생한 ○○지역 전동킥보드에서 화재가 발생, 주택 내부까지 번져 큰 재산 피해를 남겼다.

리튬이온배터리 화재 예방 수칙으로는 크게 다섯 가지이다.

첫째. 정품 충전기 사용 – 값싼 호환 충전기는 과전류 차단 장치가 부족해 화재 위험이 크다. 따라서 반드시 제조사가 인증한 정품 충전기와 배터리를 사용해야 한다.

둘째. 충전 중 무방비 방치 금지 – 장시간 자리를 비운 채 충전하거나, 취침 중 충전은 매우 위험하다. 코드를 뽑아 과충전을 방지하고 배터리가 과열되지 않도록 주의해야 한다.

셋째. 고온 환경 피하기 – 배터리는 여름철 차량 내부나 직사광선이 닿는 장소에 보관하지 말고 환기와 통풍이 잘 되는 곳에서 보관하고 사용해야 한다.

넷째. 충격·변형 배터리 사용 금지 – 외관이 부풀어 오르거나 충격을 받은 배터리는 즉시 사용을 멈추고 교체해야 한다.

다섯째. 충전 중 가연물 주변 정리 – 주변에 이불·종이·옷가지 등이 있으면 작은 불꽃도 큰 화재로 이어질 수 있으니 가까이 두지 않는 것을 권장한다.

불가피하게 화재가 발생한다면 즉시 119에 신고하고 신속히 대피 해야 한다. 또한 119에 신고 후 상황 요원의 안내에 따라 침착하게 대처한다면 화재로부터 재산과 인명피해를 막을 수도 있다.

‘사고 이후의 대응’도 중요하지만 무엇보다 중요한 것은 ‘사전 예방’이다. 우리 모두가 생활 속에서 지켜야 할 안전 수칙을 다시 한번 숙지하고 점검해야 생활 속 편리함이 온전히 제 기능을 할 수 있다.

Fire Hazards of Lithium-Ion Batteries in Daily Life: Prevention Is the Best Safety Measure
The hidden dangers within small, convenient devices are often closer than we think.
A recent surge in fire incidents involving lithium-ion batteries used in everyday items such as mobile phones, electric kickboards, and power banks is a clear example.
Lithium-ion batteries have a high energy density, making them highly efficient for charging and discharging. However, under impact, high temperatures, or overcharging, internal short circuits can occur, causing rapid heating and even explosions. Therefore, careful attention is essential.
In fact, a recent fire involving an electric kickboard in ○○ area spread into a residence, causing significant property damage.
There are five key safety measures to prevent lithium-ion battery fires:
Use Genuine Chargers – Cheap third-party chargers often lack overcurrent protection, increasing the risk of fire. Always use chargers and batteries certified by the manufacturer.
Do Not Leave Batteries Unattended While Charging – Charging while away for long periods or during sleep is extremely dangerous. Unplug the charger to prevent overcharging and monitor for overheating.
Avoid High-Temperature Environments – Do not store batteries in hot places, such as inside a car in summer or under direct sunlight. Store and use them in well-ventilated areas.
Do Not Use Damaged or Deformed Batteries – If a battery swells or is physically damaged, stop using it immediately and replace it.
Keep Flammable Materials Away During Charging – Keep bedding, paper, and clothing away from charging batteries, as even a small spark can cause a major fire.
If a fire does occur, immediately call 119 and evacuate safely. Following the instructions of emergency personnel can help minimize both property and personal damage.
While responding after an accident is important, prevention is paramount. We must all review and follow safety guidelines in daily life to ensure that the convenience of lithium-ion batteries is fully and safely realized.
