광복 80주년을 맞아 해남 대흥사 심적암터가 전라남도의 항일독립유산으로 지정되었으며, 오는 8월 31일 두륜산 도립공원에서 ‘심적암 항일 의병 추모제’가 열린다.

전라남도는 지난 8월 15일 광복절을 기념해 항일 의병과 독립운동의 발자취가 서린 도내 8곳을 문화유산으로 새롭게 지정했다.

이번에 지정된 유산은 여수 거문도 항일 유적, 광양 매천 황현 생가와 묘소, 구례 고광순 항일 전적과 순절비, 고흥 만경암 항일 의병 전적, 화순 양회일 항일 의병 유산, 해남 심적암 항일 의병 전적, 완도 오석균의 편지, 신안 두류단과 바위 글씨 등이다.

이는 광복 80주년의 정신을 계승하고, 항일 독립운동의 가치를 후대에 전하기 위한 조치다.

특히 해남 대흥사 심적암은 1909년 7월 8일부터 9일까지 이틀간 의병장 황준성과 대흥사 승려들을 포함한 의병 부대가 일진회와 일본 헌병대에 맞서 최후의 항전을 벌였던 격전지다.

당시 약 70여 명의 의병 가운데 24명이 전사하고, 8명이 포로로 잡히는 희생을 치렀다.

전투 직후 심적암 건물은 일제에 의해 전소되었으며, 전사자들의 집단 매장지는 현무교 인근으로 전해진다.

지금도 계곡 일대에서 흩어진 인골이 발견되며, 참혹했던 항쟁의 흔적을 남기고 있다.

오는 31일 열리는 추모제에서는 희생 의병들의 넋을 기리는 헌화와 묵념, 추모사 낭독이 이어지며, 지역 사회와 학계가 함께하는 기념행사도 준비된다.

이를 통해 심적암을 단순한 폐허가 아닌, 나라를 위해 몸 바친 항일 의병들의 성지로 재조명하고자 한다.

전남도 관계자는 “항일독립유산 지정은 지역의 항일 정신을 보존하는 동시에, 광복 80주년의 역사적 의미를 되새기려는 것”이라며 “심적암 추모제를 계기로 우리 후손들이 독립과 희생의 가치를 잊지 않도록 하겠다.”고 말했다.

Memorial Ceremony for the Anti-Japanese Militia at Simjeokam
― In Commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of Liberation, Designated as a Jeollanam-do Anti-Japanese Independence Heritage Site ―
To mark the 80th anniversary of Korea’s liberation, the Simjeokam site at Daeheungsa Temple in Haenam has been designated as one of Jeollanam-do’s Anti-Japanese Independence Heritage sites. On August 31, a “Simjeokam Anti-Japanese Militia Memorial Ceremony” will be held at Duryunsan Provincial Park.
On August 15, Liberation Day, Jeollanam-do designated eight new sites across the province as cultural heritage locations that bear witness to the struggles of militias and independence activists.
The designated sites are: the Anti-Japanese relics on Geomundo Island in Yeosu, the birthplace and grave of scholar Hwang Hyeon in Gwangyang, the battle site and memorial stele for Go Gwang-sun in Gurye, the Anti-Japanese militia site at Mangyeongam in Goheung, the heritage of militia leader Yang Hoe-il in Hwasun, the Anti-Japanese militia site at Simjeokam in Haenam, the letters of Oh Seok-gyun in Wando, and the Duryudan shrine and rock inscriptions in Sinan.
This initiative is intended to uphold the spirit of the 80th Liberation Anniversary and to pass on the value of the independence movement to future generations.
In particular, Simjeokam at Daeheungsa Temple in Haenam is remembered as the battlefield where, on July 8–9, 1909, militia leader Hwang Jun-seong and a unit of militias, including monks from Daeheungsa, made their last stand against members of the pro-Japanese Iljinhoe and Japanese military police.
Of the approximately 70 militia fighters, 24 were killed in battle and 8 were taken prisoner. After the battle, the Simjeokam building was burned down by the Japanese, and it is believed that the fallen were buried in a mass grave near Hyeonmu Bridge. Even today, scattered human remains are occasionally discovered in the surrounding valley, serving as stark evidence of the brutal struggle.
At the memorial ceremony on the 31st, offerings of flowers, silent prayers, and the reading of memorial addresses will be held to honor the spirits of the fallen. The event will also feature commemorative programs with the participation of both academia and the local community.
Through this memorial, Simjeokam will be redefined not merely as ruins but as a sacred site where Anti-Japanese militias sacrificed their lives for the nation.
A Jeollanam-do official stated, “The designation of Anti-Japanese Independence Heritage sites is both to preserve the region’s spirit of resistance and to reflect on the historical significance of the 80th Liberation Anniversary. We hope the Simjeokam Memorial will ensure that our descendants never forget the values of independence and sacrifice.”
