“버려진 것에 새 생명을 불어넣다” — 해남군, 연자마을 어르신과 함께한 ‘생명의 순환’ 기획전시 호평

해남군자원순환복합센터가 ‘버려진 재료에서 피어나는 생명의 순환’을 주제로 한 특별한 전시를 선보이며 관람객들의 큰 호응을 얻고 있다.

지난 20일 개막해 오는 11월 10일까지 센터 2층 기획전시실에서 열리는 이번 전시는 황산면 연자마을 어르신 11명이 참여한 공동 작품전으로, 농가 부산물과 전통 재료를 활용해 ‘순환’과 ‘지속가능한 삶’을 예술로 풀어냈다.

참여 어르신들은 ‘물찬제비’라는 이름으로 활동하며, 마을의 상징인 제비를 모티프로 삼아 생명과 순환의 메시지를 전하고 있다.

작품에는 맥간(보릿대), 폐한지, 짚풀 등 자연 소재가 사용됐으며, 전통 공예의 정성과 현대 조형 감각이 어우러져 버려진 재료 속에서 새 생명을 찾아내는 ‘순환의 미학’을 표현했다.

한 어르신 참여자는 “기후위기와 환경문제가 심각해지는 시대에 버려지는 자원을 활용한 공예를 통해 순환경제의 가치와 생명의 소중함을 다시 생각하게 된다.”며 “예술을 통해 마을과 환경이 함께 살아가는 길을 찾고 싶다.”고 말했다.

군 관계자는 “연자마을 어르신들의 손끝에서 탄생한 작품들은 버려진 재료의 새로운 가능성을 보여주는 동시에, 지역 공동체가 함께 만들어가는 지속가능한 예술의 힘을 보여준다.”며 “앞으로도 군민과 함께 자원순환과 기후위기 대응의 가치를 널리 확산시켜 나가겠다.”고 밝혔다.

한편 해남군자원순환복합센터는 9월부터 12월까지 매월 한 차례씩 ‘자원순환·지속가능발전(SDGs) 환경 전시회’를 개최하고 있으며, 기후위기 대응과 생태계 보전 등 글로벌 환경 의제에 대한 군민 공감대 확산을 목표로 하고 있다.

Resource Circulation Complex Center highlights the value of circular economy and sustainable art
Haenam County’s Resource Circulation Complex Center is gaining positive reviews for its special exhibition themed “The Cycle of Life Blooming from Discarded Materials.”
The exhibition, which opened on October 20 and runs until November 10 at the center’s second-floor exhibition hall, features a joint art show by 11 seniors from Yeonja Village in Hwangsan-myeon. The participants transformed farm by-products and traditional materials into creative works exploring the themes of “circulation” and “sustainable living.”
The seniors, who work together under the name “Mulchan Jebi” (Swallow over Water), used the village’s symbolic swallow as a motif to convey messages of life and renewal. Their artworks incorporate natural materials such as barley straw, recycled Korean paper (hanji waste), and rice straw, blending the craftsmanship of traditional arts with modern aesthetics to express the “aesthetics of circulation”—finding new life within what was once discarded.
One participating senior remarked, “In this era of severe climate and environmental crises, creating crafts from discarded materials reminds us of the importance of the circular economy and the preciousness of life. Through art, we hope to find a way for our village and the environment to coexist.”
A Haenam County official added, “The works created by Yeonja Village’s seniors not only reveal new possibilities for discarded materials but also embody the power of sustainable art built by a local community together. We will continue to promote the values of resource circulation and climate action in cooperation with local residents.”
Meanwhile, the Haenam Resource Circulation Complex Center is hosting the “Resource Circulation & Sustainable Development (SDGs) Environmental Exhibition” once a month from September to December, aiming to raise public awareness and empathy on global environmental issues, including climate action and ecosystem preservation.
