“완도, 2028 국제해조류박람회 글로벌 허브 도약!” – 국제 행사 승인 총력 추진

완도군이 2028년 개최 예정인 ‘완도국제해조류산업박람회’의 국제 행사 승인에 총력전을 펼치고 있다.

국내 최대 해조류 생산지인 완도군은 지난 2014년과 2017년 두 차례에 걸쳐 해조류박람회를 성공적으로 개최하며 산업화 가능성을 입증한 바 있다.

특히 2017년 박람회는 약 100만 명의 관람객이 다녀가고, 해조류 관련 해외 기업과 바이어를 유치하며 3천억 원 규모의 경제적 파급효과를 기록했다.

2028 완도국제해조류산업박람회는 해조류의 미래 가치를 조명하고 산업화·세계화를 선도하며, 대규모 산업형 박람회를 통해 수산 식품 수출과 지역 경제 활성화를 목표로 기획됐다.

오는 2028년 4월 21일부터 5월 14일까지 완도 해변공원 일원에서 ‘해조류, 생명의 기원에서 인류의 미래로’를 주제로 7개 전시관과 국제 해조류 심포지엄, 수출 상담회 등 다채로운 행사가 열린다.

이번 박람회는 단순 전시를 넘어 블루카본으로서의 해조류 미래 비전 제시, 기후변화 대응 식품 산업 모델 개발, 글로벌 교류 확대를 통한 산업형 박람회 정착, 수산업 중심 지역 경제 활성화 등 종합적인 목표를 설정했다.

군은 지난 5월 ‘2028 완도국제해조류산업박람회 기본 계획 수립 용역 최종 보고회’를 개최하고, 국제 행사 승인을 위해 전라남도와 함께 해양수산부, 기획재정부 등 중앙부처와 긴밀히 협의 중이다.

10월에는 국제 행사 개최 계획서를 해양수산부에 제출할 예정이며, 정부 심의 통과, 국제기구·관계 기관과의 연대 강화, 박람회조직위원회 구성 등 철저한 준비를 바탕으로 박람회 유치에 나선다는 전략이다.

국제 행사 승인은 정책성 등급 조사 등을 거쳐 2026년 상반기에 결정될 예정이다.

신우철 완도군수는 “2028 완도국제해조류산업박람회는 완도 해조류의 우수성을 알리는 동시에, 완도군이 해조류 산업을 선도하는 글로벌 중심지로 도약하는 전환점이 될 것”이라며, “정부의 국제 행사 승인과 범정부 차원의 지원을 이끌어 내기 위해 모든 역량을 집중하겠다.”고 말했다.

“Wando to Emerge as Global Hub with 2028 International Seaweed Industry Expo” – Full Effort to Secure International Event Approval
– Seven Exhibition Halls Including Seaweed Ecosystem, Export Consultation Meetings, and Diverse International Programs Planned –
Wando County is making an all-out effort to obtain international event approval for the upcoming 2028 Wando International Seaweed Industry Expo.
As South Korea’s largest seaweed-producing region, Wando has successfully hosted the Seaweed Expo twice, in 2014 and 2017, demonstrating the potential for industrial development.
Notably, the 2017 Expo attracted around one million visitors, drew participation from international companies and buyers, and generated an economic ripple effect of approximately 300 billion KRW, proving the global potential of the seaweed industry.
The 2028 Wando International Seaweed Industry Expo is designed to highlight the future value of seaweed, promote its industrialization and globalization, and lead seafood product exports while revitalizing the regional economy through a large-scale industrial expo.
Scheduled from April 21 to May 14, 2028, at Wando Beach Park, the Expo will operate seven exhibition halls, host an international seaweed symposium, conduct export consultation meetings, and offer a variety of international programs under the theme:
"Seaweed: From the Origin of Life to the Future of Humanity."
Beyond simple exhibitions, the Expo will set comprehensive goals, including: presenting the future vision of seaweed as blue carbon, developing food industry models to respond to climate change, establishing an industrial expo through expanded global exchanges, and revitalizing the local economy centered on fisheries.
In May, the county held the Final Report Meeting for the Basic Plan Study of the 2028 Wando International Seaweed Industry Expo. To secure international event approval, Wando County is working closely with Jeollanam-do, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, and the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
In October, the county plans to submit the international event proposal to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. The strategy focuses on government approval, strengthening partnerships with international organizations and relevant agencies, and forming an Expo Organizing Committee to ensure successful hosting. International event approval, based on policy-level evaluations, is expected in the first half of 2026.
